Meet the Dealer: Gayle from Splendid!

Here is another fun “Meet the Dealer”! Gayle Tweed, Stars and Splendid dealer #35, is one of the owners of the antiques malls and has been with the gang since the beginning.

“What great fun this has all been–the thrill of the hunt, the acquiring of objects I find to be beautiful, creating a home that expresses what I love, having so many friends who share a common interest, and making a living in an occupation which gives me great satisfaction.”
–Gayle Tweed, Splendid dealer #35

She has retired from active duty, but Gayle has a lovely space on the Splendid side and is a fountain of stories and information. Let’s hear what makes the lady tick…

How long have you been a dealer?
I bought and sold at the Palmer/Wirfs Antique Show for over twenty years. I still attend every show. I have traveled several times to Nashville for the large and incredibly beautiful Heart of Country Show, and recently to Texas for all the amazing shows at Round Top. I have shopped in many states of the USA, Mexico, France, England Scotland, Wales, Ireland, and Italy.

Last spring, I took a space at Splendid to sell off some of the overflow I had acquired while working at the malls. I really don’t buy for resale, but for me, selling out of a booth seems like the sensible thing to do. It is working and I am having lots of fun.

What is the vintage score that got away?
I have always believed that I am merely the custodian of all these goodies that I purchase, and once I make up my mind to part with something, I never regret it.

Do you collect some specific things for your own home?
I have a passion for creating a look in my home with antiques and vintage items. It started in the late seventies when I was consumed with the modern look of American Country Decorating. I was one of many similar collectors in the Northwest. I bought and sold items for years to support my habit. Along the way I met countless dealers and collectors.

I love architectural fragments, textiles—quilts, coverlets, old homespun and handwoven linen, ‘30s and ‘40s floral barkcloth, ‘40s tablecloths, handcrafted furniture with original paint, anything with flaky alligatored paint (in fact—I was “shabby” before it was “chic” along with many others), old trade signs, oil paintings, silver plate, garden items, vintage clothing, and so much more. I have a condo in Neskowin which is filled with vintage shell art of all kinds—mostly picked up at Stars or given to me as gifts. My latest passion is repurposed jewelry.

Any vintage shopping tips?
I think I learn the most from exposure by going to antique shows, flea markets, antique malls, and shops. I also have a large collection of Country Decorating books and have subscribed over the years to Country Living, Country Home, Victoria, Mary Englelbrieght, House Beautiful, Country Gardens, Architectural Digest, Where Women Create, A Simple Life, Vogue and, recently, Veranda. Even if I get a tiny nugget of inspiration it is worth it!!!

What non-vintage shops do you frequent?
I am a huge Anthropolgie fan and go there to get ideas. I greatly admire Ralph Lauren and over the years have seen wonderful displays in his stores. Lately I have enjoyed going to the Queen of Tarte sales. I am also inspired and humbled by going to the lovely homes and gardens of the talented friends I have made over the years.

What is your favorite era?
For a time I thought it would have been nice to live in the colonial days since I love the early American antiques. But now, just for the fun of it, I could see myself in Southern California in the 1940’s. I like the glamour of the movies then and love the yearly issue of Architecural Digest which features the movie stars’ homes. I can picture myself with a five piece set of luggage, traveling by train, all dressed up in a tweed suit with a peplum, a daring hat with a net covering my eyes, and wearing open-toed high-heeled shoes. I would be sitting in the dining car at a table covered with linen and silver. I would be enjoying a martini with my new friends, Humphrey, Lauren, and Katherine. I think I would be working as a movie extra.

What is your favorite place to eat in Portland?
My favorite lunch place is in the garden at Merriweather’s on Vaughn Street. Favorite dinner place is Tidal Raves in Depot Bay at sunset.

How do you unwind?
I unwind by gardening, taking watercolor journaling lessons, reading, doing crosswords, and watching my kitties Simon and Soxie. I have collected a few clear glass battery jars and want to try to make some terrariums this winter. I am obsessed with moss of all kinds!
