Ways to Say I Love You

Valentines Day is approaching and it’s time for romantic thoughts and poetic words inspired by the eclectic mix of items at Stars, Stars & Splendid, and Stars Too ! So many ways to say “I Love You”!

Decorations on wood won’t hide all my sins,
but when I’m with you our “love always wins”.

Flowers and lace from Victorian times,
Forget-me not this Valentines.

Vintage velvet boxes in shades of red and wine,
shall overflow with treasures if “jewel” say you’re mine!

This rose is so lovely and my gift to you,
as this little bird sings of our love so true.

I’ve carved our names in a heart on a tree in hopes that you will be with me.

You can “spin me round” in circles and I’ll still be loving you!

“Cancelled stamps” will “send” me to you,
“Forever” posting that our love is true.

“Note after note” with “accordion fold”,
My love for you is a sight to behold.

It may appear a little “cheesy” to some,
But the “boxes are stacked” and you are the one.

I’d pick a bale of cotton to “sticks” with you.

Valentine you “bowl me over”. “Wood” you be mine?

I’d “sail” the seven seas to find a love as true as you.

Just “sew” you know I’m on pins and needles.
“Cushion” the blow and say you’ll be mine!

I’m not “clowning” around, you’re my better half.

I’m “knot” intending to “hog” all your time,
But I’d squeal with delight to have you as mine.

Have you heard the “buzz”? I want to “bee” with you.

“Slow” with emotions but deep with devotion,
Lets get together and cause a commotion!

I’ll be taking “baby steps” to prove my love for you.

My love for you spills over like “gravy” in a “boat”.

Nothing special to say I could “chat” all day long,
‘cuz for you sweet Valentine, my heart beats strong!

So many clever ways to express your feelings! Get inspired by what you see and creative in how you express your love this Valentines Day. Open daily from 11-6. SHOP SMART. SHOP STARS.

Meet the Dealer: You’ve Been Pinked!

This week we’re talking to Devanda! She is 1/2 of the best friend duo behind Stars and Splendid space #6, You’ve Been Pinked. I must say their booth looks like a dreamy valentine right now! So many sweet things to bring back to your nest. Devanda and Pam have a lot of fun finding new treasures to bring to the booth. This is their first romp of selling vintage and they’ve been with us for almost two years now (time flies!!). Maybe you will find that special something you have been looking for–they bring in new items on a weekly basis.

What would you say your specialty is?
Furniture from the 20s and 30s. We stock our booth with things that we would have in our own homes. Romantic homes style things.

How did you get into vintage?
We have always loved it and have been collecting forever

Do you collect some specific things for your own home?
Toleware and anything pink (of course!). So many different interests. Hard to list them all!

What is your favorite era?
Pam’s is the 30s—50s and mine is… probably about the same!

What is your dream vintage score?
Oh there are so many…

What is the vintage score that got away?
Can’t really think of any right now. We don’t really worry about the ones that got away—just always on the hunt for more treasures.

Any vintage shopping tips?
Just have to keep at it and have some luck!

What is your favorite place to eat in Portland?
Sayler’s Old Country Kitchen

Do you find inspiration in any movies, TV shows, music, theater, arts, sports, etc?
Love watching old 30s and 40s movies… love the houses, furniture… all of it!

What non-vintage shops do you frequent?
Target and home goods stores.

What do you like to do when you aren’t working?
Pam loves to read and I love to decorate and read all the decorating magazines.

How do you unwind?
I unwind with my magazines.

Stop by Splendid and see You’ve Been Pinked!

Gayle’s View: A Valentine for You and Me

A Valentine for you (and me)

I purchased this valentine last year at the Queen of Tarte Sale, and it is one of my favorite things. It is large–about 12 inches high and 10 inches across. It is a mixture of paper, trims and fabric.

When I went to the Tarte sale this year, I saw another very similar valentine in the space occupied by Karen Otto. I realized that she was the creator of the wonderful collage. My Stars Antiques partners and I have known Karen for over 20 years as she participated in the lifestyle show called The Magic of Christmas that we produced at that time. Karen has a wonderful blog called A’Musements and has been featured in the beautiful Stampington publication called Artful Blogging. It was fun to visit with Karen and see other creations she had crafted.

I started out trying to be a craftsperson when I was a young mother. I actually did sell my works at various sales (to be honest I was not the most talented of artists). But after years of being around really talented craftspeople, I came to realize that I could recognize true talent. And that ain’t so bad!!

I keep saying to all of you that I am humbled and in awe of the creativity that I see in so many ladies–their work, their photography, their blogs, their collecting, their home decorating–even the way many of them dress and present themselves to the world.

Because of those shows we produced years ago and owning and working in the Stars malls, attending other craft and art and antique shows, I have been blessed by being surrounded by these hardworking, imaginative ladies. (There are men too, but I am mostly talking today about the ladies).

I do think it is important to keep working on “right-brain” activity” and I have kept up with my painting classes all this winter. Our exceptional teacher, Jude Siegel, always has something positive to say about our work. One of our classes in January was drawing and painting a face card. Some of the more accomplished students ended up with whole pages of cards. I had only one, but it occured to me that my little page of the Queen of Hearts would make a valentine. So I share, once again a page with you.

My Queen has a banner surrounding her and it reads:

“Why, sometimes I’ve believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast”, said the Queen to Alice.”—Lewis Carroll

I agree with the Queen… it is really fun to think about impossible things and sometimes they really do happen. I know.

Gayle’s View: A Genuine Patina

Why buy vintage gifts for Valentine’s Day?

I read the list below right before Christmas on Anne Weiland’s blog on her wonderful website called Shop Vintage Portland. I e-mailed her and asked for permission to use it on our Stars shop blog because I agreed with her and wanted to share it with you. So here goes:

10-It is the ultimate eco-gift! No new use of resources or labor.

9-Craftsmanship. Vintage items were made out of high quality materials and feature unique design details.

8-History. You are buying an item that has proved to be fashionable throughout history.

7-History (part 2). It is fun to own something vintage and think of how a person from a whole other generation appreciated it as well.

6-Uniqueness. No chance of hitting the streets with a new scarf only to see three other people with the same one!

5-Supporting a small business. Instead of lining the pockets of big box stores, you can support an independent business owner.

4-Authenticity. Why buy rip-offs of old designs when you can get the original.

3-Authenticity (part 2). Why buy something that has been “distressed” to look old when you can get something that has genuine patina.

2-Save some cash. Vintage items are often times much less expensive than new.

1-Don’t participate in the mad rush to the mall. Vintage is easy to find off the beaten path.

This vintage pillow is something I have had for years. I bought it because it makes me smile and because I remember as a little girl pulling the petals off a daisy and saying just those words. I’m not ready to part with it yet, but someday I will pass it on to a little girl.
