Home Sweet Home

What makes us hunt and gather as we prepare to nest in our homes? It’s an extension of our dreams and passions as we create our personal environment. Stars, Stars & Splendid, and Stars Too offer the best selection of everything you can imagine! There’s nothing better than self-expression and an eclectic mix of found items that portray every aspect of what makes you tick.

Look back at your heritage and the details of family heirlooms that have influenced your taste in interiors.

Victorian hardware embellished with floral patterns, the asymmetry of delicate curves that balance out the top of an oak secretary, and the hard edged details and finials in old cast iron beds all have strong design elements that are rare and unique.

Even a bottle opener placed over a chipped and crackled pantry holds significance.

Mexican art and metal frames illustrate ornamentation at it’s finest.

The function of wooden and wicker bowls and storage baskets add texture and pattern as they nest tabletop.

Soft faded florals cover curtains, textiles, sheets, and duvet covers and bring a romantic feel to all rooms.

Nature comes inside with forced branches of buds, nests, and moss covered branches creating still lives for the wall along with wonderful shadows as the sunlight passes through the room.

Bold color comes in the form of collectible Hawaiian print mugs as well as a hand painted wall piece by a local artist.

Cooking in the kitchen is a favorite pastime and social activity as we invite friends and family to share in conversation and the breaking of bread.

Ultimately, home is where we are at our best. Join us everyday of the week from 11:00-6:00pm and begin the never-ending task of making your house a home. SHOP SMART. SHOP STARS.

Celebrating Rio

The 2016 Olympics have brought us together once again as we gather to watch the competitions and behind the scenes stories at home or at our favorite watering hole. Pride reigns supreme as we view so many athletes worldwide with humble beginnings. As the weeks pass we prepare for the closing ceremonies and
Stars, Stars & Splendid, and Stars Too have wonderful collectibles and vintage treasures to make the celebration unique.

Strike up the band as we plan evening festivities with friends and family. Unique and individual but united by one common thread, this is what makes up the spirit of these competitors. The world will be watching with anticipation!

What are the odds of winning everyone over? The personal hurdles are what hold our interest as we watch. Would you place a bet on your endurance and determination to train as these athletes do?

While many of us will support the ‘Home’ team, it’s easy to be moved by an individual’s story from another country. Watching nightly with our best friend we’ve learned about the bonds that have been formed through trials and tribulations.

A hearty appetite wins us over as we watch the rigorous training that occurs before ever arriving at the competition. Be sure to have plenty of fluids and mix up a great casserole to sustain you through the evening’s activities.

The American flag waves in the distance along with all countries competing. Reporters will have a final look at awards won and records broken to document in the journals of time.

The golden sun sets on Rio as we observe the closing ceremonies on Sunday, August 21. We salute all those who took part in the Rio Olympics. To the dedication, competitive spirit, and discipline of all the athletes who participated; we thank you for inspiring us!

Join us every day and be just as inspired as the Stars team pulls out all the stops to make your visits here as good as gold. SHOP SMART. SHOP STARS.

Scary Selections at Stars

Halloween is a favorite holiday for Stars, Stars & Splendid, and Stars Too. Every year, all three shops welcome Halloween with open arms and rattling bones! Scary selections and decor to die for are always the theme as we move closer to October 31.

Illusions are everywhere. What looks like a simple blanket could be an eerie sunrise. A paper dress may take you on a psychedelic journey of op art. Keep your eyes open as mischief lurks and is likely to play mayhem with the ordinary everyday items found at the stores.

A ghastly gamble, throw the dice to see where they land and enter at your own risk as you shop for decoration ideas.

The shrill cries of the crow rattle even the most steadfast shopper.

Move slowly and make lots of noise! Expect the unexpected at every turn.

Danger and the dreaded black cats will surely cross your path. Fill your basket quickly and keep moving through the aisles. Keep your wits about you and most importantly, remember to breathe.

Evil lurks and lingers; sinister faces peer out from behind glass and quietly stare from tabletops as you make your way to the registers. Your pace quickens as you wonder how much more your heart can take.

Witches green with envy peer about with wicked thoughts while ghosts and goblins slink and slither with plenty of tricks up their sleeves. Timing is everything; the earlier in the day, the better the selection.

Best to get out now and shop while there is daylight!! Have a swig of potion to gather up the nerves! Open from 11AM to 6PM daily, you just never know what you may stumble across for your everyday needs and Halloween decor! SHOP SMART. SHOP STARS!

How did you get into vintage?
I discovered the thrift shops when I was 14 in the mid-1960’s.

Do you collect some specific things for your own home?
The charming, the quirky, and the whimsical.

What is your favorite era?
The thirties, forties and the fifties.

What is your dream vintage score?
A gentleman called and asked me to go through his mother’s trunks of embroidered linens. It was the most amazing collection of treasures that she had created from the 1920’s through the 1960’s.

What is the vintage score that got away?
It’s okay if something gets away. We are just temporary owners and everything should be out in the universe. It’s very easy for me to let things go.

What is your favorite place to eat in Portland?

What non-vintage shops do you frequent?
The Mill End Store. I work there 3 days a week!

What do you like to do when you aren’t working?
I love old musicals and talking to my friends on the phone. I volunteer at the church, the hospital and at Hopewell House.

How do you unwind?
A good book and a glass of prosecco.

Are there other collectors in your household?
My teenage daughter collects clothes.

Do you find inspiration in any movies, TV shows, music, theater, arts, sports, recreation etc?
I love the plays in Ashland and I got to see “Mary Poppins” at the Keller last June. Mary Cassatt and Jesse Wilcox are my favorite painters. I’m crazy about Rogers and Hammerstein. All the great singers: Ella, Frank, Judy and Mary Martin inspire me to sing and dance along.

Thanks, Shelley! Make sure to check out Shelley’s space at Stars and Splendid, booth #27! If you’d like to meet more of our dealers–check out our Meet Our Dealers! section.

Let’s Shop

It has been quite a weekend with the mega Summer Palmer Wirfs Antiques & Collectibles Show out at Expo and the Stars On Sale Summer Event. Expo brings in thousands of customers to the Portland area three times a year but the Summer edition is the BIG ONE. If the amount of buying is any indication of the health of the economy, we are on the road to recovery. Buyers were opening up their wallets and spending. They want a deal of course but shoppers were willing to spend for what they wanted.

Amid all of this shopping frenzy, I was able to do some shopping of my own. I really just tagged along with our Let’s Shop shopper who does the Let’s Shop weekly shopping column on our website. If you haven’t taken the time to check this out, you should.

Wearing dark sunglasses so no one could see what we were persuing, I had a shopping lesson with a pro. You will have to check out Let’s Shop this week for the Let’s Shop shopper’s choices but here are some of the tasty morsels that I found this weekend.

where to use them? I like them in a row

my love affair with vintage fabric continues

it's summer and I am drawn to white things

the coolest folkart doggie I have ever seen

these paper lanterns have just the right degree of decay

what can I say, I love these religious icons

the evil sisters of cinderella?

I have never met a chair that I didn't fall in love with

world travel each time you look at this graphic map

Taking my cue from the Let’s Shop shopper, I looked everything over with a critical eye. But what I really learned from this shopping experience was, Let’s Shop and Let’s have FUN!!! And I did.

Summer Whites

What is it about the color white that is so soothing? When Summer finally arrives, I find myself yearning for the clean, cool color of white. White has numerous hues just like any other color. Warm, cool, creamy to stark, my personal favorite is the white that has the patina of age. I love color but wouldn’t it be fun to decorate a house all in white. Taking my iphone, I wandered the two malls to get inspired by what I could find. I was not disappointed. Now I just need to find that house.

Praying for…

It has been a long wet winter and spring here in the Northwest. I was shopping in Stars yesterday and came across these iron letters in Dealer 26’s space. SUN what a wonderful concept when you haven’t seen it for awhile. And why do we feel so much better when that golden orb is shining down on us?

The forecast is for more sunshine. Prayers are answered….sometimes
