Setting the Stage for Spring

Brisk clean breezes and bits of sunshine fill the house as we start opening doors and windows. Spring makes brief appearances and vanishes with the cold rains, but in the Pacific Northwest we’re already planning our gardens, gathering seeds, and turning the soil. Get a head start on new ideas at Stars, Stars & Splendid, and Stars Too. Whether you’re an avid gardener or simply enjoy the change in the season, our doors are open and we’re filling the shops with fresh air and fresh merchandise.

Early mornings bring songbird symphonies as our days get longer.

Bouquets are being gathered from the yard as snowdrops, crocuses, violets, and daffodils open and lift their heads towards the sky.

Colorful calicos cover this quilt and offer up warmth on a cool evening after a long and productive day outdoors.

Bright colors and deep shades of green in this granny square afghan are reminiscent of a well tended flower garden.

Pot decorations covered in buds, bees and bright flowers are a simple color boost to empty terracotta planters on the porch.

Gather your favorite seed catalogs and introduce a few new varieties in annuals and perennials.

Create a vignette of spring favorites to brighten a corner with similar colors in different mediums.

Change out the paintings in a room for a fast and easy update. Shopping for a new collection of vintage artwork can often be found for pennies on the dollar and allows for the thrill of the hunt.

Bring flowers inside that will never fade with these painted wooden boxes which create decorative storage. Stack mixed patterns for interest.

Aged and crackled porcelain pitchers could be the new focal point for the kitchen. Display on open shelves or on top of a cabinet; this tone on tone ivory features a wash of color across a glorious bird resting on a branch.

An early 1900’s postcard delights the eye as gardeners prepare for the first cuttings from their rose shrubs.

Pick up the pace and keep your heart healthy by taking walks in new neighborhoods and parks. Portland offers up a host of public gardens to explore and every week the view changes as the foliage grows.

Pack up the car and get out for an afternoon of exploring Sellwood and Westmoreland.

Take a drive in any direction and enjoy the farming communities, pastures, or mountainsides filled with animals.

Switch out the navy and black for bold prints and colors in outerwear.

Keep your head up and enjoy the beauty of the radiant sun.

Ways to Say I Love You

Valentines Day is approaching and it’s time for romantic thoughts and poetic words inspired by the eclectic mix of items at Stars, Stars & Splendid, and Stars Too ! So many ways to say “I Love You”!

Decorations on wood won’t hide all my sins,
but when I’m with you our “love always wins”.

Flowers and lace from Victorian times,
Forget-me not this Valentines.

Vintage velvet boxes in shades of red and wine,
shall overflow with treasures if “jewel” say you’re mine!

This rose is so lovely and my gift to you,
as this little bird sings of our love so true.

I’ve carved our names in a heart on a tree in hopes that you will be with me.

You can “spin me round” in circles and I’ll still be loving you!

“Cancelled stamps” will “send” me to you,
“Forever” posting that our love is true.

“Note after note” with “accordion fold”,
My love for you is a sight to behold.

It may appear a little “cheesy” to some,
But the “boxes are stacked” and you are the one.

I’d pick a bale of cotton to “sticks” with you.

Valentine you “bowl me over”. “Wood” you be mine?

I’d “sail” the seven seas to find a love as true as you.

Just “sew” you know I’m on pins and needles.
“Cushion” the blow and say you’ll be mine!

I’m not “clowning” around, you’re my better half.

I’m “knot” intending to “hog” all your time,
But I’d squeal with delight to have you as mine.

Have you heard the “buzz”? I want to “bee” with you.

“Slow” with emotions but deep with devotion,
Lets get together and cause a commotion!

I’ll be taking “baby steps” to prove my love for you.

My love for you spills over like “gravy” in a “boat”.

Nothing special to say I could “chat” all day long,
‘cuz for you sweet Valentine, my heart beats strong!

A Passion for Textiles

The wealth of textiles available serve so many purposes in our homes and workplaces. Form and function prevail while color and texture create a feeling of contentment and well-being. Stars, Stars & Splendid, and Stars Too have a vast selection to fill your linen closet and more. Have fun intermixing patterns and textures and the result will be creating a statement that is uniquely your own.

From waking up under a treasured quilt that keeps us comfortable and snug to crocheted coverlets and chenilles. The temperatures are cooling at night and it’s time to bring out the blankets and create some visual interest and provide warmth.

Decorative doilies and tablecloths add charm to a breakfast nook in the wee morning hours or at the dining room table for cozy evening meals.

Embroidered florals are soft and delicate in color and keep lovely flowers for you inside as autumn winds blow the remaining petals off the zinnias, daisies, and dahlias outside.

Silk runners with hand-braided fringe from the Victorian era bring romance and nostalgia to a dresser top or side table in the bedroom.

A cut velvet drapery panel serves as a backdrop on a sofa piled high with embroidered peacock pillows and a handwoven wool blanket.

Heavily fringed piano stools covered in quilted silks and satin work well at the dressing table and easily double as a small table to set your reading book as you drift off to sleep in your favorite chair.

Repurposed remnants teamed with bits and pieces of trim are a simple project to make for holding favorite jewelry, lingerie, and hosiery.

Vintage floral screen dividers add privacy in close quarters and shade the afternoon sun on a warm fall day.

Hooked rugs under foot are perfect bedside when the wood and stone floors start feeling cold on the toes!

Bold and colorful tapestries, rugs, and pillows transport us to another place and allow pattern and texture to be a focal point in any room.

Whatever your style, you’re sure to find a look that expresses who you are from romantic florals to bold rich color, from classic design to a mix of diverse pieces from around the world. Mother’s Day at Stars!

The Stars family has been an extension of my life and activities with my mother, Vera, over the years. As we near Mother’s Day on Sunday May 10th, virtually every vendor at Stars, Stars & Splendid, and Stars Too has something that would bring a smile to mom’s eyes! Start your shopping early, get ideas, take notes, remember where you saw it, and if you love it, don’t hesitate for it may be gone when you return! The Stars’ stores have so many ideas and options it gets overwhelming, much like our love for moms, grandmothers and other remarkable women in our lives. Happy Mother’s Day!

Here are some things that my own mother would love — maybe yours would love them too!

Colorful additions to her collection of owls and songbirds celebrate her love of Nature.

For those moms who love working out in the garden there are a myriad of wonderful planters.

If a day at the beach is her passion, select a handmade shell box to hold treasures.

For the home, the simplicity of ivory furnishings are an easy fit for most home decor. Eastlake influences have delicate flower designs and a feminine element for mom.

A cheerful throw pillow with bold red is a constant reminder of your love; perfect for the bed or favorite chair.

Vintage glass and marble lamps with shades of deconstructed fabrics or lace will be appreciated on the side table by her favorite stack of reading materials.

Cut and pressed glass pitchers and accessories cast rainbows of light across the wall and will be lovely intermixed with existing pieces as mom entertains.

A wonderful retro mirrored vanity in a smaller scale can be placed in the bedroom. Fresh flowers will multiply with all the reflections!

Glasses double as vases for the cuttings from the flower garden each morning.

Timeless fashion includes anything turquoise!

The contrast of black and clear baubles and beads dancing around the neck is true artistry.

Animal prints run wild through the stores — a classic that defies age.

Red makes a great accent to any wardrobe — this time in a roomy leather bag with strap.

Furnishings in wood run from small compartmentalized organizers…

…to oversized cupboards with glass doors on top for display and wooden doors below for storage.

Perhaps a set of mugs that hold memories from when she was a girl will end up in her cupboard!

A well loved game for family night or a jewel-toned memory vase may be the answer.

Luggage with favorite travel destinations may take the place of the traditional box and wrapping paper with an airline ticket tucked inside!

Even a great old wavy glass jar or canister holds beauty. Fill it with sharpened pencils and have a notepad nearby for all the to-do lists.

Over the years many people in the Stars family have met my mom, Vera. For several years, she joined me at the store on weekends. She would sit near my space working word-find puzzles and sewing her yo-yos from fabric scraps that people kindly brought in for her! She has lived with my husband and I for the past eight years as we journey with her through the progression of Alzheimers. Miss Vera and I (the reality of calling her ‘mom’ slipped away three years ago) have always had a special connection. She will always be first and foremost my beloved mother, but as I became an adult and began to visit with her more, we bridged the mother-daughter relationship and became great friends. I had the incredible opportunity to know her as a woman — a midwestern farmer’s daughter, Swedish in heritage. We have gone through many highs and lows over the course of my life, but have always agreed that we love each other through thick and thin. I love you, mom! Today and always. Love, Janice

…to colorful luncheon and dessert plates…

…an Asian-style table featuring a bird in the midst of bamboo…

…red cardinals who appear to fly out and about…

…and even a wealth of real estate.

Alcohol proof trays and containers from Japan feature wispy florals and butterflies in flight.

Live ferns and green plants fill a tabletop and bring a bit of Nature indoors.

Vintage books featuring colored illustrations of flowers are a favorite for many gardeners.

Floral patterns cover everything imaginable. Serving trays may be used functionally for a gathering or hang on the wall for impact.

Bouquets of color gracefully flower across the drawers of a black and gold dresser.

Oil canvases take on different interpretations of flower arrangements.

Porcelain containers can store coffee or tea and brighten the kitchen.

Quilts and coverlets give a fresh look to the sofa or bed.

Even metal and iron become delicate flowering branches in wall decor and chandeliers.

With these great options celebrating the arrival of Spring even a rainy day becomes more bearable. Come join us whatever the weather and take home a little bit of sunshine and happiness.

Gifts of Love

Valentines Day is right around the corner. Stars, Stars and Splendid, and Stars Too are bringing out the pink, red and blush tones to celebrate the day!

From fabric garlands to simple vignettes, the shops are full of different ways of expressing and sharing your love in a most unique manner.

Fresh flowers and tins filled with sweets are the expectation for many; however the stores are filled with a wide array of alternatives.

Trade the traditional bouquet for a framed vintage label featuring a turn of the century gal embellished with flowers.

Flowers can also be delivered through paintings, ephemera and still life prints.

Look for the colors of the day in an original piece of artwork featuring soft pastels.

A settee upholstered in a romantic tapestry of figures and a lush garden landscape wins over the Victorian enthusiast.

Cozy up and send some warmth. For the children we adore, the stores offer a number of wool and cotton coverlets. For those of us a bit older, find a great vintage sweater or cardigan to wear into the early Spring.

Even furnishings, large and small, will deliver a special magic when painted in pink or red.

Happy Valentines Day to all! Shop Smart. Shop Stars. Open daily from 11AM-6PM.

Form and Function

It’s hard to imagine a home without pottery of some kind.

Consciously, I never really thought about how much pottery I had acquired until I began writing this post. Displayed on tables, inside cupboards, on shelves, and windowsills, it is everywhere.

The utilitarian role is hard to argue; how can you not collect something that is such a joy to the eye, is available in many colors, sizes, and shapes, and serves a multitude of roles in the home and workplace. It is the quintessential fusion of form and function!

My collection began with plates. When I bought my home I began entertaining and loved intermixing colors and patterns, to create a unique look. I inherited my grandparents Red Wing crocks and butter churns from the turn of the century. Mixing and cooking bowls came from each of my grandmothers when my mother was ready to part with them. Over the years I have picked up, perhaps, too many vases, pots, bowls, and dishes as I hunt and gather for my home and studio.

My current passion is small bowls that stack precariously in the cupboard 3-10 high and are used daily for all sorts of things.

Some of the pottery is artfully displayed — the cooking bowls are stacked in mild disarray on an open shelf.

A corner shelf holds the three Majolica Ware pieces that I own.

Virtually every dealer at Stars, Stars and Splendid, and Stars Too feature a small collection within their space.

Our owners, Brent Heeb and Darwin Otto, show their personal style of collecting and merchandising at Stars Too. Their style is inspirational, their displays magical. Pottery is displayed on ledges, tabletops, open shelves and behind closed cupboard doors.

Dealer #2 at Stars features a wealth of contemporary white pottery with a few vintage pieces mixed in to anchor her space.

Dealer #27 at Stars shows a number of collectible pieces of earthenware, crocks, and bowls in vignettes in every color imaginable.

Across the street at Stars and Splendid, along the back wall of the store, is Dealer #118 who sells nothing but pottery, earthenware, and china!

From canisters, plates and vases, to studio pottery and recognizable collectibles, the form and function of pottery pieces have their place working daily in our homes and workplaces.

Find pottery treasures of your own at all three Stars shops from 11am to 6pm daily.

Meet the Dealer: Michelle from Splendid!

Hello! Today we’re excited to catch up with one of our wonderful newer Stars & Splendid dealers, Michelle Kunigisky of Michelle Kunigisky Designs and Busy Bee Quilt Designs. Stop by her space–she’s Splendid dealer #3.

Meet Michelle–here’s a fun interview for you and some photos of her space!

How did you get into vintage?
I became fascinated with vintage items as a kid visiting my grandparents in central Pennsylvania. We went to auctions with our lawn chairs and bought lunch from the Mennonite ladies who sold fresh baked goods from their table as the auctioneer emptied a house of its contents, one box or item at a time. I loved the thrill of it all and each treasure I collected was a memory of the fun day spent with my grandma and grandpa!

How long have you been a dealer? Do you work alone?
I have been a dealer for about 18 years. I like to work with my friend Rich or my mom, Birdie. We are good at knowing what each other likes and we tend to move at the same pace. Working with them makes everything more fun.

What would you say your specialty as a dealer is?
I love vintage linens and dishes. I would say those three are my specialties but then, I love a lot of categories.

What is your dream vintage score?
Italian Ex Votos, which are ornate heart shaped, silver offerings, are an ultimate score for my personal collection. I found a close second recently when I came upon a detailed metal statue of Mary on a wooden pedestal from a monastery in Switzerland. It is a treasure that makes me happy every time I see it!

Any vintage shopping tips?
When shopping for vintage items, never pass on something you truly love. There have been several pieces I walked past only to pine over them for years. Also, it pays to check your favorite shops regularly as you never know what will show up!

Do you collect some specific things for your own home?
I collect cream McCoy pottery, vintage fabric and monogrammed silver for my own home when I find pieces that speak to me.

How do you like to unwind?
Reading is how I usually unwind but hanging out with friends is the very best.

What are some of your favorites place to eat, visit or shop in Portland?
A couple of my favorite places to eat in Portland are Por Que No on SE Hawthorne or Screen Door on E Burnside. Screen Door’s fried chicken and their green tomatoes are the best! Ink & Peat has amazing gifts, jewelery and beautiful floral arrangements–it is a favorite shop where I always find the perfect gift and a lot of inspiration.

What is your idea of a perfect summer day?
My perfect summer day is having a cookout with all of my family at my mom and dad’s house. The food is always delicious and being with the people I love is my idea of perfect.
