New Year, New View

Here at Stars, Stars & Splendid, and Stars Too we celebrate another year with thoughts and comments from our shoppers as we enter into 2016.

Life imitates art and art imitates life and sometimes it’s difficult to know which we are witnessing.

All things in life aren’t black and white; there are areas of grey matter that we should consider.

Even a common object holds beauty if we choose to see it.

To be one of many isn’t necessarily the best for all; some need to be individual, to be bright and vibrant.

Living simply requires that basic needs be met.

Age and experience add character and beauty.

A good life should be in balance.

We should have respect for one another and celebrate our differences.

If we look closely, beauty can be found in everything that surrounds us.

Even those that are broken and shattered hold a beauty of their own.

Certain things in life are best repeated.

Create a haven for matters of the heart and meditate on these things daily.

It’s a wonderful life. Enjoy the journey!

Happy New Year. Thank you for your loyalty and patronage. We look forward to seeing you throughout the coming year! Open daily from 11AM to 6PM daily and we are open regular hours on New Year’s Day and New Year’s Eve! SHOP SMART. SHOP STARS.

Resolutions and a Big Stars Vintage Sale

January has brought with it a wealth of change and opportunity. Stars, Stars and Splendid, and Stars Too vintage dealers have been busy bringing in fresh, new merchandise in preparation to purge the old at the annual STARS FAMOUS HAGGLE SALE which runs Friday, January 16 through Monday, January 19. Open daily from 11AM to 6PM! This sale is one of my favorites because I love to haggle, clear my space of older pieces, and check off one resolution — a new look for a new year!

It’s easy to sit back and contemplate change, but better to achieve it. Halfway into January 2015, we tend to lose sight of any resolutions made for the New Year. We have good intentions, but our daily life can interrupt and play havoc on any hope for true change.

Set your clock a bit earlier and you’ll be amazed at what can be achieved in a short amount of time. You may even wake up to the neighbor’s chickens’ morning banter.

Start putting more fresh fruits and vegetables out in bowls and on platters. This is not only a colorful centerpiece, but a healthy snack.

Cut back on sugar and salt in your diet!

Hide the sweets away! Temptations are easy to pass up when they are not visible.

Start a collection of vintage cookbooks from Stars and search out healthier meals and menus!

Share those meals with old friends and new by scheduling gatherings throughout the year.

Make time for fresh air and exercise. Take up a new sport or get more proficient at an old one. Shopping at any of the Stars stores burns many calories! The hunt and gather, stretching to reach something up high and squatting to check out what’s in the baskets along the floor — all great exercise.

Reach out to an acquaintance by writing a letter with a vintage typewriter. Find classic stationery and envelopes as you shop with the Stars team to personalize the look!

Tell someone you love them. Vintage Valentines are in store now.

Take time for yourself.

Take a personal holiday.

Finish unfinished projects…

… and start saving for new ones.

Get organized at home — especially the kitchen! We have metal bins and cubbies of all shapes and sizes, industrial carts and tables, and wall mounts for your coats, bags and more.

Get creative by recycling found items. Don’t have the time or patience? Find it as you shop at Stars, Stars and Splendid, and Stars Too. We have a wealth of dealers who create one-of-a-kind pieces from fabric, metal, wood, shells, and more.

Take time to curl up under a lovely quilt and read a book or plan this spring’s flower garden.

Experience art.

Remember to take time to laugh and be silly.

Get better in touch with yourself, know your body and it’s limitations. Then work to feel great at the close of each day by what you have accomplished.

Happy January, everyone. Thank you for your continued patronage to our stores! Remember to join us this Friday, January 16th as we open our doors at 11AM for the STARS FAMOUS HAGGLE SALE. All three stores are overflowing with great items for your home, office, studio and, of course, gifts for friends. The sale runs through Monday, January 19th.

Time Flies

Time Flies02

I recently celebrated my 55th birthday and it surprised me how quickly the last year passed. I know to many that I’m still a youngster, but to many more I’m probably viewed as old!! I see so many things at Stars, Stars & Splendid, and Stars Too that I remember from my youth.

Time Flies04

Growing up in the Midwest, I longed for a pair of fancy cowboy boots with all the curves and topstitching defining every edge.

Time Flies05

I couldn’t help but grimace when I ran across this macrame shoulder bag at Stars Too. Not that I don’t love this bag, but somewhere upstairs in my closet, covered in dust, I have a navy blue purse that I started to ‘knot’ in the fifth grade. It really is almost done — I just have to tie off all the threads at the base. Truly!

Time Flies24

Who out there remembers the fashionable granny squares in these bold color palettes? We not only had the throws made by grandma, but the vests and sweaters too.

Time Flies21

I’m in the stores virtually every Saturday — a shopping day for many families. I love when I hear children comment and ask their parents “What is that?”

Time Flies16

“You grew up with a typewriter? How does it work? Where’s the mouse? How do you hit send?”

Time Flies19

“Grandma and Grandma made butter from scratch? Why didn’t they just go to the store?”

Time Flies03

Walking through the stores I smiled as I viewed the changing times and laughed to myself as I saw this popular schoolyard chant from when I was a young girl!

Time Flies10

The original function and purpose of an item is not necessarily why we invest in it today as a collectible piece.

Time Flies09

Time Flies15

Time Flies12

Sometimes we purchase an item that takes us back in time to a simpler life.

Time Flies06

Time Flies20

Time Flies23

Sometimes the item is simply for the vernacular statement.

Time Flies11

Most often, it is a collectible that will be displayed and cherished even if it is never to be used! Come shop with us daily from 11am to 6pm. Find your favorite pieces from your youth as you view the displays at all three Stars shops!

Around the World in a Day

play and win
We have this event in our neighborhood called Passport. I am old enough to remember the days of traveling when your passport was stamped at each and every country. And you dressed up when you flew. Shirt, tie, suit coat and even the shoes were shined brightly when I boarded that plane for Europe. It was a badge of honor to have stamps in your passport from all of the countries you visited.

Five years ago, my good friend Debbe from Tilde in Sellwood came up with this awesome event to promote her business and her surrounding neighbors too. We in Westmoreland came on board in year four. Each year this event seems to have a rebirth and emerges as one of our most popular neighborhood happenings.

The concept is fairly simple. You take your Passport (which you can obtain at Stars) visit as many of the participating businesses you would like and get a stamp in your Passport. You can either get the minimum necessary for entering the contest for some amazing prizes (we will get to that in just a bit) or you can go whole hog and see how many businesses you can get to in a day. Oh yes, there are quite a few people that do this whole hog routine each year.

The whole point of this event is to expose our neighborhood customers to businesses that they may never have visited before. I took on this challenge last year, going to as many places as I could during the day. Frankly, I was proud of myself. If you have ever walked in either of the neighborhoods you are aware of the distances. So practical shoes are necessary.

What I found out from “doing the Passport experience” was that I was pretty clueless as to all the various goods and services in my own neighborhood. I have lived in Sellwood for 20 years and have had a business in Westmoreland for 21 years. Where have I been? When did that shop move in? It was a great experience and I will do it again. I was pleased to see the amazing diversity of my neighborhoods. One more year has gone by. Quite a few new folks have moved into the hood with their new businesses. It’s time to explore.

The businesses that participate in The Passport Event are quite generous with their donations. You can win some down right fabulous gifts. All that information is on the Sellwood Westmoreland website. A weekend at The Resort at the Mountain is not too shabby in my book.

Get your Passport booklet, map out your strategy and travel the world. The world of Sellwood Westmoreland that is. We just might see each other along the way. Just look for someone in sensible shoes.

everyone that plays the passport game is happy

watch for the balloons

be sure and eat. need to keep up your strength

ok, it can drive you a bit crazy

Let’s Shop

It has been quite a weekend with the mega Summer Palmer Wirfs Antiques & Collectibles Show out at Expo and the Stars On Sale Summer Event. Expo brings in thousands of customers to the Portland area three times a year but the Summer edition is the BIG ONE. If the amount of buying is any indication of the health of the economy, we are on the road to recovery. Buyers were opening up their wallets and spending. They want a deal of course but shoppers were willing to spend for what they wanted.

Amid all of this shopping frenzy, I was able to do some shopping of my own. I really just tagged along with our Let’s Shop shopper who does the Let’s Shop weekly shopping column on our website. If you haven’t taken the time to check this out, you should.

Wearing dark sunglasses so no one could see what we were persuing, I had a shopping lesson with a pro. You will have to check out Let’s Shop this week for the Let’s Shop shopper’s choices but here are some of the tasty morsels that I found this weekend.

where to use them? I like them in a row

my love affair with vintage fabric continues

it's summer and I am drawn to white things

the coolest folkart doggie I have ever seen

these paper lanterns have just the right degree of decay

what can I say, I love these religious icons

the evil sisters of cinderella?

I have never met a chair that I didn't fall in love with

world travel each time you look at this graphic map

Taking my cue from the Let’s Shop shopper, I looked everything over with a critical eye. But what I really learned from this shopping experience was, Let’s Shop and Let’s have FUN!!! And I did.

Partying at The Parker

My idea of partying was having breakfast at The Parker in Palm Springs. The Parker is the go to hotel for some of the current “stars” that make their way to Palm Springs these days. It gets pretty busy with star wattage during the Palm Springs International Film Festival in January of each year.

While we were excited about eating at The Parker, my real reason for going was to see the interior design done by Jonathan Adler. Mr. Adler made a name for himself with his unique and sexy ceramics. That springboard brought him name recognition in design circles. Thus the gig at The Parker.

the lobby ala jonathan adler & mid century decor

Being in Palm Springs the epicenter of mid century interiors and architecture, it only made sense for someone, someday to do a hotel. The Parker is it. There are plenty of others in the mid century mode around the city but I wanted to see what Mr Adler had done.

just missing a cocktail don't you think

So the three of us, Darwin, our friend Tammy and myself pull up to the front doors of The Parker in our road weary junking van. Three weeks of bugs and road dirt do not make for a stylish entrance. But I have to say the parking valet did not raise his eyebrows when we pulled up. I was watching him. Watching him very closely.

Our hunger was overcoming my curiosity so we made tracks for Norma’s the breakfast restaurant at The Parker. When seated on the outdoor patio with the breakfast menu in hand, we surveyed our dining companions to assess if any or all were some kind of celebrity. They were all young, all hip, all chic, half our age but not a celeb among them. So let’s eat.

What a breakfast we all had. Eggs bennie on artichoke hearts, another eggs benedict but served on a pancake, eggs scrambled with a generous pile of bacon, a complimentary fruit smoothie for each of us and on each of our plates, the most wonderful small round roasted potatoes I have ever tasted. I know,” where are the photos of the food?” Sheepishly I must admit that our beautiful breakfasts were just about consumed before I even thought about this photo op.

organic mid century

Our tummies quite full, we made our way through the extensive gardens along paths that wound lazily through this large complex. I had enough of the nature walk and made for Jonathan and his lobby.

I was not disappointed. I would describe the decor as organic mid century. Plenty of interesting accessories, objects and the necessary furniture to suggest mid century but not shout it. I loved the colors and if someplace makes me smile, they have my vote. After a couple of tours around the lobby investigating and photographing we smiled at the hotel counter staff who eyed us like visiting paparazzi. Called for our car and drove off with a contented feeling of pleasure. Cute small roasted potatoes can do that to you.
