String up outdoor lights on the porch and grab your embellished sweater to greet trick or treaters. And don’t forget your hat!

Which witch wishes for a night flight?? Only close friends know the answer.

Lanky skeletons are hanging out in the strangest places and befriending those around them.

Keep mom’s wise words in the back of your mind as you prepare for October 31st. Don’t cross paths with a black cat. Be wary of webs, and watch for crawling rats and flying bats in the dark alleyway.

Make your plans early, call your friends to gather and go have some fun!!

We’re open everyday from 11-6 for all things orange and black, creepy crawly stuff, and things that go bump in the night! SHOP SMART. SHOP STARS.

Scary Selections at Stars

Halloween is a favorite holiday for Stars, Stars & Splendid, and Stars Too. Every year, all three shops welcome Halloween with open arms and rattling bones! Scary selections and decor to die for are always the theme as we move closer to October 31.

Illusions are everywhere. What looks like a simple blanket could be an eerie sunrise. A paper dress may take you on a psychedelic journey of op art. Keep your eyes open as mischief lurks and is likely to play mayhem with the ordinary everyday items found at the stores.

A ghastly gamble, throw the dice to see where they land and enter at your own risk as you shop for decoration ideas.

The shrill cries of the crow rattle even the most steadfast shopper.

Move slowly and make lots of noise! Expect the unexpected at every turn.

Danger and the dreaded black cats will surely cross your path. Fill your basket quickly and keep moving through the aisles. Keep your wits about you and most importantly, remember to breathe.

Evil lurks and lingers; sinister faces peer out from behind glass and quietly stare from tabletops as you make your way to the registers. Your pace quickens as you wonder how much more your heart can take.

Witches green with envy peer about with wicked thoughts while ghosts and goblins slink and slither with plenty of tricks up their sleeves. Timing is everything; the earlier in the day, the better the selection.

Best to get out now and shop while there is daylight!! Have a swig of potion to gather up the nerves! Open from 11AM to 6PM daily, you just never know what you may stumble across for your everyday needs and Halloween decor! SHOP SMART. SHOP STARS!

BOO! Spooky Stars + Monster March!

Not only are we having a “monster” sale this weekend (Sat 11-6 & Sun 12-6 both shops) at Stars, but Sunday 10/30 at 3pm, the 11th Annual Sellwood-Moreland Monster March Halloween parade will kick off! You can even snap up a great Monster March t-shirts (of all sizes) and totes online–Sellwood artist, Gary Hirsch, created this year’s fantastic design. To make it more fun and festive neighborhood biz, Sweet Pea’s, will be handing out balloons again this year!

The Sellwood-Moreland Monster March was created by Kathy Diamond and Lynn Van Horn (with a lot of help from Liz Cerabino-Hess, the former, former owner of Haggis McBaggis!) and is sponsored by the Sellwood-Westmoreland Business Association. The parade will start at Llewellyn Elementary (6301 SE 14th Ave) school at 3pm on Sunday, October 30th, and be lead, as it has since the beginning, by our local fire engine! You can view the route here.

The march has always been about community, with a special emphasis on our schools. True to Kathy Diamond’s original vision and any profits made by the sale of the official Hirsch-designed T-shirts (buy here!), or other merchandise, will be given to the foundations of our neighborhood schools: Llewellyn Elementary, Duniway Elementary and Sellwood Middle. Please feel encouraged to support these foundations by giving at! HAVE FUN!

Not really spooky, but very pretty and Halloween-y!

Meet the Dealer: Cathy & Leesa from Stars!

Today for “Meet the Dealer” we’re talking to the two dealers behind Stars space #28, Cathy Ronningen and Leesa Scales. These ladies are newbies in the Stars family that have been with us since July! They’ve had a lifelong love of vintage, but their business together at Stars, “Black Shutters”, is their first run at wheeling and dealing antique treasures.

“We both inherited the love for old and odd treasures from our mothers. Both our childhood homes were filled with furniture and pieces with history. It was the way we were raised.”
–Cathy Ronningen, Stars dealer #28

As you’ll see, they are some of our dealers who take Halloween seriously! Stop by their space and check out the new scores! Here is a nice interview with Cathy…

What would you say your specialty is?
We really enjoy anything that looks aged and loved. We will always try to have a great selection of old silver, books, painted and primitive furniture and incorporate an early portrait or two.

Do you have a partner or partners that work with you?
My partner in Stars is Leesa Scales. Leesa and I have been best friends our entire lives. In fact, our mothers were best friends when they were pregnant with us. We have shared childhood vacations, horseback riding, dragging the gut in high school, double dates, weddings, pregnancies, divorces and our love of antiques and junking!

How did you get into vintage?
I would have to say that Leesa and I inherited the love for old and odd treasures from our mothers. Both our childhood homes were filled with furniture and pieces with history. It was the way we were raised!

Do you collect some specific things for your own home?
My favorite items to collect for my home would have to be early portraits, old mirrors, chairs that need work, leather bond books and anything monogrammed. Leesa is a big collector of old books, old silver, mirrors and just about anything painted black!

What is your favorite era?
Hmm.. I’m not sure for me. Leesa definitely loves the romantic, Tony Bennett type of music and—I’m guessing—that era.

What is your dream vintage score?
My big dream score would be that one incredible painting that you could build an entire home around—and, of course it would be cheap!

What is the vintage score that got away?
I know this sounds stupid to everyone else but, I missed out on a really incredible “midget wrestling” trophy dated 1955. The trophy was in the back of an old pickup truck about 15 years ago at the Round Top Texas Sale. The owner of the truck disappeared and I finally gave up waiting for him to return, I still think about that dumb trophy. Silly, isn’t it?

Any vintage shopping tips?
When shopping for antiques, I think the key is to keep on top of Craigslist, estate and garage sales and any favorite junk stores you find along the way. If you find a great piece at a garage or estate sale, go back the final day to see if the price has been reduced.

What is your favorite place to eat in Portland?
Leesa and I both love the Ringside Restaurant for a steak and onion rings. We’re on the hunt for the best vanilla latte in Portland!

What non-vintage shops do you frequent?
I love to stop by The Rebuilding Center on Mississippi and check out the back of Restoration Hardware for architectural pieces.

What do you like to do when you aren’t working?
We both have three adult kids. I have three daughters and Leesa has three sons. We love to spend time with our families and Leesa will be marrying soon! Leesa and her family spend a lot of time in their boat on the river during warm summer days as well as golfing when they have time.

How do you unwind?
I love to go to my favorite junk stores, estate sales and then grab a latte or two throughout the day. Leesa loves to hit as many Goodwills as she can in a single day and is constantly moving the furniture around her home.

Are there other collectors in your household?
So far, our kids are not thrilled with anything older than they are!

Have any fun trips planned?
Leesa and I recently went to Texas and hit the Round Top Texas Sale. We found some great treasure to fill our booth!

Do you find inspiration in any movies, TV shows, music, theater, arts, sports, recreation etc?
I have to admit that I love watching “American Pickers”, “Million Dollar Decorators”, and way too many shows on HGTV!

Thanks, Cathy & Leesa!

Mitzi’s Spooky Space!

Like I mentioned last time, some of our vintage dealers at Stars Antiques Malls get more into the holiday spirit than others and Mitzi Lee Jones is definitely one of them! Please stop by her booths at Stars–she is dealer #79. You’ll find pumpkins, skulls, skeletons, tattered Victorian umbrellas, black cats and even striped wrapping paper mixed in with all her marvelous vintage treasures. If you remember–she was already planning out her decorations this summer! She’s obsessed with her ghoulish goodies and so are we!

Halloween at Stars & Splendid!

We thought you might like to see some of the spooky fun that will greet you at Stars & Splendid Antiques! We take our holidays pretty seriously around here and Halloween is a great time around the shops. Some folks take it more seriously than others and walking into the booths that are really decked out can be so inspiring for your own decorations at home. We hope you come down and have a look!
