Setting the Stage for Spring

Brisk clean breezes and bits of sunshine fill the house as we start opening doors and windows. Spring makes brief appearances and vanishes with the cold rains, but in the Pacific Northwest we’re already planning our gardens, gathering seeds, and turning the soil. Get a head start on new ideas at Stars, Stars & Splendid, and Stars Too. Whether you’re an avid gardener or simply enjoy the change in the season, our doors are open and we’re filling the shops with fresh air and fresh merchandise.

Early mornings bring songbird symphonies as our days get longer.

Bouquets are being gathered from the yard as snowdrops, crocuses, violets, and daffodils open and lift their heads towards the sky.

Colorful calicos cover this quilt and offer up warmth on a cool evening after a long and productive day outdoors.

Bright colors and deep shades of green in this granny square afghan are reminiscent of a well tended flower garden.

Pot decorations covered in buds, bees and bright flowers are a simple color boost to empty terracotta planters on the porch.

Gather your favorite seed catalogs and introduce a few new varieties in annuals and perennials.

Create a vignette of spring favorites to brighten a corner with similar colors in different mediums.

Change out the paintings in a room for a fast and easy update. Shopping for a new collection of vintage artwork can often be found for pennies on the dollar and allows for the thrill of the hunt.

Bring flowers inside that will never fade with these painted wooden boxes which create decorative storage. Stack mixed patterns for interest.

Aged and crackled porcelain pitchers could be the new focal point for the kitchen. Display on open shelves or on top of a cabinet; this tone on tone ivory features a wash of color across a glorious bird resting on a branch.

An early 1900’s postcard delights the eye as gardeners prepare for the first cuttings from their rose shrubs.

Pick up the pace and keep your heart healthy by taking walks in new neighborhoods and parks. Portland offers up a host of public gardens to explore and every week the view changes as the foliage grows.

Pack up the car and get out for an afternoon of exploring Sellwood and Westmoreland.

Take a drive in any direction and enjoy the farming communities, pastures, or mountainsides filled with animals.

Switch out the navy and black for bold prints and colors in outerwear.

Keep your head up and enjoy the beauty of the radiant sun.

Join us daily from 11AM to 6PM as we set the stage for spring! With every visit you’re sure to find something different as our dealers bring in new picks constantly! Mark your calendars and get additional savings Thursday through Monday, March 3 through 7 this week, as we celebrate with our Spring Stars On Sale event at all three stores! SHOP SMART. SHOP STARS.

Perfect Summer Day

This summer has been a surprise with record temperatures. Although we have seen a recent cooling period, the local weather folks say we’re headed back to warmer days. Here are some great ideas from Stars, Stars & Splendid, and Stars Too to consider while you SHOP OUR AIR-CONDITIONED STORES!!

You know it’s time to get out of the house when even the animals are looking hot and sluggish.

Grab a colorful woven tote.

Glance at the sunlight as it casts color and patterns on the wall behind you as you step out.

Enjoy the blue sky and the fragrance of the flowers as you leave your cares behind.

Grab some light fare from one of the many fabulous eateries in the area.

Ice cream is essential. Always.

Search out unique outdoor furniture, there are great selections of vintage motel chairs.

Metal bistro and patio sets have been salvaged and up-cycled.

Don’t forget to grab the outdoor lanterns for when the sun goes down!

Our dealers have a number of fun items for the garden, including the classic, collectible watering cans.

Vegetables, fruits, and flowers are fresh and ready to bring inside and hang, rather than rinse and prepare!

Water elements for the yard and garden are in abundance; from contemporary birdbaths to antique wash tubs for children!

Mountain streams and ocean shores beckon us when the mercury rises! Find a cool spot to fish.

Search for shells in the sand.

Fly a kite.

Feel the sand and water rush between your toes as you step into liquid.

On returning home, create a new mixed drink concoction.

Serve over ice in polkadot patterned vintage tumblers.

Throw an old quilt out on the lawn (or barkcloth) for casual seating.

Call the gang over for an impromptu evening gathering.

Mother’s Day at Stars!

The Stars family has been an extension of my life and activities with my mother, Vera, over the years. As we near Mother’s Day on Sunday May 10th, virtually every vendor at Stars, Stars & Splendid, and Stars Too has something that would bring a smile to mom’s eyes! Start your shopping early, get ideas, take notes, remember where you saw it, and if you love it, don’t hesitate for it may be gone when you return! The Stars’ stores have so many ideas and options it gets overwhelming, much like our love for moms, grandmothers and other remarkable women in our lives. Happy Mother’s Day!

Here are some things that my own mother would love — maybe yours would love them too!

Colorful additions to her collection of owls and songbirds celebrate her love of Nature.

For those moms who love working out in the garden there are a myriad of wonderful planters.

If a day at the beach is her passion, select a handmade shell box to hold treasures.

For the home, the simplicity of ivory furnishings are an easy fit for most home decor. Eastlake influences have delicate flower designs and a feminine element for mom.

A cheerful throw pillow with bold red is a constant reminder of your love; perfect for the bed or favorite chair.

Vintage glass and marble lamps with shades of deconstructed fabrics or lace will be appreciated on the side table by her favorite stack of reading materials.

Cut and pressed glass pitchers and accessories cast rainbows of light across the wall and will be lovely intermixed with existing pieces as mom entertains.

A wonderful retro mirrored vanity in a smaller scale can be placed in the bedroom. Fresh flowers will multiply with all the reflections!

Glasses double as vases for the cuttings from the flower garden each morning.

Timeless fashion includes anything turquoise!

The contrast of black and clear baubles and beads dancing around the neck is true artistry.

Animal prints run wild through the stores — a classic that defies age.

Red makes a great accent to any wardrobe — this time in a roomy leather bag with strap.

Furnishings in wood run from small compartmentalized organizers…

…to oversized cupboards with glass doors on top for display and wooden doors below for storage.

Perhaps a set of mugs that hold memories from when she was a girl will end up in her cupboard!

A well loved game for family night or a jewel-toned memory vase may be the answer.

Luggage with favorite travel destinations may take the place of the traditional box and wrapping paper with an airline ticket tucked inside!

Even a great old wavy glass jar or canister holds beauty. Fill it with sharpened pencils and have a notepad nearby for all the to-do lists.

Over the years many people in the Stars family have met my mom, Vera. For several years, she joined me at the store on weekends. She would sit near my space working word-find puzzles and sewing her yo-yos from fabric scraps that people kindly brought in for her! She has lived with my husband and I for the past eight years as we journey with her through the progression of Alzheimers. Miss Vera and I (the reality of calling her ‘mom’ slipped away three years ago) have always had a special connection. She will always be first and foremost my beloved mother, but as I became an adult and began to visit with her more, we bridged the mother-daughter relationship and became great friends. I had the incredible opportunity to know her as a woman — a midwestern farmer’s daughter, Swedish in heritage. We have gone through many highs and lows over the course of my life, but have always agreed that we love each other through thick and thin. I love you, mom! Today and always. Love, Janice

Spring Forward

All this recent sunshine has forced bulbs to open, trees to bloom, and flowers to lift their heads and the same is true of the new items coming into the stores! Stars, Stars & Splendid, and Stars Too are bursting with florals, birds, and fresh looks for your home and garden! Join us as we make our way through the aisles to ‘pick’ our favorites.

Early morning walks feature a symphony of birdsong! A stroll through the stores presents a variety of decor featuring this feathered friend. From salt decanters for the kitchen or craft area…

…to colorful luncheon and dessert plates…

…an Asian-style table featuring a bird in the midst of bamboo…

…red cardinals who appear to fly out and about…

…and even a wealth of real estate.

Alcohol proof trays and containers from Japan feature wispy florals and butterflies in flight.

Live ferns and green plants fill a tabletop and bring a bit of Nature indoors.

Vintage books featuring colored illustrations of flowers are a favorite for many gardeners.

Floral patterns cover everything imaginable. Serving trays may be used functionally for a gathering or hang on the wall for impact.

Bouquets of color gracefully flower across the drawers of a black and gold dresser.

Oil canvases take on different interpretations of flower arrangements.

Porcelain containers can store coffee or tea and brighten the kitchen.

Quilts and coverlets give a fresh look to the sofa or bed.

Even metal and iron become delicate flowering branches in wall decor and chandeliers.

With these great options celebrating the arrival of Spring even a rainy day becomes more bearable. Come join us whatever the weather and take home a little bit of sunshine and happiness.

Resolutions and a Big Stars Vintage Sale

January has brought with it a wealth of change and opportunity. Stars, Stars and Splendid, and Stars Too vintage dealers have been busy bringing in fresh, new merchandise in preparation to purge the old at the annual STARS FAMOUS HAGGLE SALE which runs Friday, January 16 through Monday, January 19. Open daily from 11AM to 6PM! This sale is one of my favorites because I love to haggle, clear my space of older pieces, and check off one resolution — a new look for a new year!

It’s easy to sit back and contemplate change, but better to achieve it. Halfway into January 2015, we tend to lose sight of any resolutions made for the New Year. We have good intentions, but our daily life can interrupt and play havoc on any hope for true change.

Set your clock a bit earlier and you’ll be amazed at what can be achieved in a short amount of time. You may even wake up to the neighbor’s chickens’ morning banter.

Start putting more fresh fruits and vegetables out in bowls and on platters. This is not only a colorful centerpiece, but a healthy snack.

Cut back on sugar and salt in your diet!

Hide the sweets away! Temptations are easy to pass up when they are not visible.

Start a collection of vintage cookbooks from Stars and search out healthier meals and menus!

Share those meals with old friends and new by scheduling gatherings throughout the year.

Make time for fresh air and exercise. Take up a new sport or get more proficient at an old one. Shopping at any of the Stars stores burns many calories! The hunt and gather, stretching to reach something up high and squatting to check out what’s in the baskets along the floor — all great exercise.

Reach out to an acquaintance by writing a letter with a vintage typewriter. Find classic stationery and envelopes as you shop with the Stars team to personalize the look!

Tell someone you love them. Vintage Valentines are in store now.

Take time for yourself.

Take a personal holiday.

Finish unfinished projects…

… and start saving for new ones.

Get organized at home — especially the kitchen! We have metal bins and cubbies of all shapes and sizes, industrial carts and tables, and wall mounts for your coats, bags and more.

Get creative by recycling found items. Don’t have the time or patience? Find it as you shop at Stars, Stars and Splendid, and Stars Too. We have a wealth of dealers who create one-of-a-kind pieces from fabric, metal, wood, shells, and more.

Take time to curl up under a lovely quilt and read a book or plan this spring’s flower garden.

Experience art.

Remember to take time to laugh and be silly.

Get better in touch with yourself, know your body and it’s limitations. Then work to feel great at the close of each day by what you have accomplished.

Happy January, everyone. Thank you for your continued patronage to our stores! Remember to join us this Friday, January 16th as we open our doors at 11AM for the STARS FAMOUS HAGGLE SALE. All three stores are overflowing with great items for your home, office, studio and, of course, gifts for friends. The sale runs through Monday, January 19th.

Sugarplum Delights

Shopping for great gifts is easy when you join us at Stars, Stars and Splendid, and Stars Too. The difficult part is the process of narrowing down the selection and sticking to the task at hand! Open daily from 11:00-6:00pm gives ample time to browse through the many aisles and displays to find the perfect gift for friends, family, and often times, a special item for yourself!

From collectible political advertising pins from the past…

…to oversized original paintings by local artists, the selection has never been better or more diverse as our dealers fill their spaces.

Well-loved and worn dolls delight the child and the collector alike.

Nothing beats a cold winter night like a new design book filled with fresh inspiration and ideas for the home and garden.

For the gourmet cook, clever signage makes for a unique gift to hang in the kitchen or pantry!

Vintage plates, cups and saucers add new combinations for entertaining anytime of year. There is no end to the color options or patterns. You’ll be sure to find the perfect place setting for the hostess and/or host on your list.

For those in love with the grain of wood, nothing beats a series of well seasoned wooden bowls in all shapes and sizes. Use functionally or decoratively. When not in use, leave them visible atop a large cupboard stacked and nested for the texture and sculptural element.

In love with plaid? Keep those you love warm in wool shirts and jackets.

Find a great vintage thermos in a matching plaid and venture up to the mountain or over to the coast for a hot cup of cocoa and warm someone’s heart.

For those with a passion for copper; pots, pans, molds and kettles are in abundance and spilling off the shelves.

Prized porcelain basins in blue patterns and designs for the more distinguished taste!

A large selection of vintage and antique gilt frames for those who prefer gold are scattered throughout all three stores. Perfect for artwork or to hang a miniature inside a large frame. A more contemporary idea is inserting a chalkboard for daily notes and reminders!

Hang a wreath on the door as you decorate, open your door and heart to those you love, celebrate the magic of the season, and celebrate the essence and the spirit of the Holidays every day of the year!

Up and Running

Here’s what’s new at the trio of Stars Antiques stores

All three stores are packed full! Dealers have been coming in and restocking and the selection of goods is at an all time high. Let’s take a walk through the stores and enjoy the collections of our favorite haunts. There is no end to what you will find as you browse through Stars, Stars and Splendid, and Stars Too. Remember, if you see something you love, buy it because it may not be there tomorrow.

With summer in full swing, the sidewalks are also filled with more great finds that our dealers bring in on the weekends. From bold color to white on white, from salvaged gates and bed frames to furnishings built from reclaimed materials, from vintage and collectibles to weathered and worn antiques, you are sure to find inspiration and fresh ideas as you hunt and gather.

Popular vintage patio table sets designed for the outdoors are just as suitable for the sunroom and dining area. The colorful interplay of Bauer plates and bowls just makes meals taste better especially when served al fresco.

While you’re changing out the rooms, take the iron bed outside for warm late afternoon siestas. Better yet, position it strategically in the yard or on the porch and sleep outside for the cool breezes that carry the fragrance of jasmine and honeysuckle through the evening air. Think about taking an old garden gate and hanging it on the fence for great shadow play as the sun passes through the yard. Hanging it indoors, the gate quickly becomes a wire grid clipboard of favorite photos and notes.

Pillows of burlap and bows give a quick update to any chair, sofa, or bed in neutrals at Stars.

If you want more color try out the colorful silk souvenir pillows complete with fringe at Stars Too.

Grab a book to curl up with from the sorted and categorized book cart found outside of Stars on the sidewalk every weekend.

Better still, if you feel daring, pull a few volumes from the many books artfully arranged in the cupboard at Stars Too.

If you love the notion of repurposing and buying found objects, check out the salvaged windows and architectural elements that are displayed in all the stores.

From corbels and balustrades to newell posts and cornice pieces — everything old is new again when you find a new function for it.

Salvaged and repurposed wall mounts of glass, porcelain, and brass are combined with escutcheons, cover plates, and even plumbing parts to give a one-of-a-kind look to your hall, pantry, or bath and clear up clutter at the same time.

Reclaimed Douglas fir floor joists and beams become solid, sturdy, and functional tables in all shapes and sizes. Teamed with welded, blued bases of steel the turn of the century materials merge with the current industrial craze.

Indulge yourself as you shop at Stars Antiques, Stars and Splendid, and Stars Too this summer. Brighten up your interiors by pulling out your collections and displaying them in full view for everyone to enjoy!

Stars Customer Collections: Jen Cavanagh

Today we’re talking to another one of our fab customers, Jen Cavanagh, and getting a peek inside her home. We love how she has brilliantly repurposed these beautiful architectural salvage pieces she found at Stars. Thanks, Jen!

“I’m not even sure what these are, but they hang in my dining room and I am IN LOVE with them! I initially only bought two, but when I got them home I realized three would look better, so I ran back to Stars Antiques to by the 3rd one. They echo the three windows on the opposite wall of my dining room. Whenever I have people over, they always comment on how beautiful they are. I look at them every night when I eat dinner and could not be happier with them.”
–Jen Cavanagh, a lovely Stars Antiques customer

How did you get into vintage?
I loved everything in my grandmother’s house. I still have a lot of her things in my home to this day. I think it makes me nostalgic, and brings back great memories of growing up in the house right next door to my grandparents.

A few things you particularly love to collect?
I love bone china teacups! I am always on the hunt for a design different from what I have.

What is your dream vintage score?
I just bought an old Hoosier from a friends mom. It needs a total renovation and I can’t wait to do it!

Is there a vintage score that got away?
An old trumpet! I saw it at a yard sale and immediately regretted not getting it. By the time I went back it was gone 🙁

Are there other collectors in your household?
No, I don’t think my husband could handle another collector!

Any vintage shopping tips?
Always look at things for what they could be used for instead of what they were previously used for.

What are some of your favorites place to eat, visit or shop in Portland?
My favorite store on the planet is STARS, no question! My husband and I love trying new places to eat. We love breakfast, so some of our favorites are Screen Door, Zell’s Cafe and Genie’s Cafe.

What is your perfect summer day?
I love getting up early and going yard saling in the summer. I think it’s a great way to explore new neighborhoods. Cap that off with lunch at a cafe and a relaxing night around the firepit and I’m a happy woman. 🙂
