Painted Furnishings

When creating a personal look in your home with unique furnishings, there are several choices. You start by considering keeping the original patina or looking for an item with a fresh coat of paint or possibly a distressed finish. Stars, Stars & Splendid, and Stars Too are filled with one-of-a-kind pieces that are affordable and cover antiques and vintage and some more contemporary designs.

Ivory palettes are easy to intermix with existing pieces and evoke a clean fresh feel. They have a great shabby chic feel when distressed.

Neutrals in slates, grays, and taupes are abundant at all three Stars shops. You’ll find decorative side tables, shelving, large cabinets, benches, outdoor tables, and more! The selection is at an all time high as our dealers bring pieces in for the inside as well as outdoor rooms — for use on the porch and deck as weather gets better.

Bright colors add an accent to any room and can be permanent additions or seasonal. Repeat the accent color with smaller items like pillows, vases, and artwork to bring the entire room together.

Make a statement with a wonderful whimsical piece that stands alone. This colorful chair can be a side table, be hung on a wall as a shelf, or simply be used functionally as a child’s chair.

Distressed and weathered pieces show age and history and adapt beautifully with any interior.

Join us every day of the week from 11AM to 6PM and search for painted furnishings to give a room a boost as well as creating additional storage and display surface. Stop back often — inventory changes daily. Also, be sure to check out the offerings on the sidewalk as the weather gets better. SHOP SMART. SHOP STARS.

Meet the Dealer: Shirley from Stars!

For our fun “Meet the Dealer” column today here on the Stars blog, we have lovely Stars dealer #41, Shirley Yancey. This is Shirley’s second time around as a dealer here at Stars and we’re happy to have her back since she’s moved back to the Pacific NW from Arizona.

“If you see something you love, GET IT! Don’t ever think you are the only one who loves your treasure. If you wait to think about it and try to come back later, IT WILL BE GONE.
—Shirley Yancey, Stars dealer #41

Shirley has been in the biz since 1982 and keeps up two amazing spaces here at Stars! Her business model has evolved from custom made lampshades and vintage lamp restoration, into “chippy paint” furniture, industrial furniture, clothing, housewares and, of course, she still has an eye for fabulous lighting. She is always bringing in new items, so her booths are constantly changing and refreshed.

A Fun Q&A With Shirley

How did you get into vintage?
Originally I wanted a vintage floor lamp with a custom made Victorian shade for my home. We had 4 children and it wasn’t in the budget. So I started looking for a floor lamp that needed to be rewired, my husband showed me how to rewire the lamp I found. Then—through trial and error—I made a shade for my first floor lamp! I had friends tell me, ” I’ll pay you for a lamp and shade”, so begin my business!

Do you collect some specific things for your own home?
I of course have a collection of lighting in my home, but also a collection of 6 old cupboards. One of the oldest is a fir cupboard from the mid 1800’s I purchased and restored from Portland.

Do you have a partner or partners that work with you?
My husband is my partner, he is always there to help me with whatever needs to be done!

What is your favorite era?
I like 1920s and 30s era.

What is your dream vintage score?
It would be wonderful to find a Tiffany lamp or a great piece of Stickley furniture.

What is the vintage score that got away?
There have been a few of those, a Craftsman bed, a pair of wonderful old nightstands and a Victorian folding screen.

What is your favorite place to eat in Portland?
There are so many good and unique places to eat in Portland. Some of my favorites are Bernies Southern Bistro on SE Alberta, Pambiche on SE Glisan and Nicholas on SE Grand Ave.

What do you like to do when you aren’t working?
Spending time with my family and taking time to explore the many vineyards in the area.

How do you unwind?
There are so many great Farmers Markets here to go to. I find it soothing to walk through the stalls and look for that nights dinner.

Are there other collectors in your household?
My husband is lover of photography and is always taking wonderful pictures wherever we are. Our daughter collects vintage Star Wars items.

Have any fun trips planned?
I would like to make another trip to California to the Rose Bowl or to the Long Beach Antique Market.

Do you find inspiration in any movies, TV shows, music, theater, arts, sports, recreation etc? What are you into right now?
I enjoy watching the Food Channel and HGTV for ideas and to keep up with the latest decorating ideas!
