New Year, New View

Here at Stars, Stars & Splendid, and Stars Too we celebrate another year with thoughts and comments from our shoppers as we enter into 2016.

Life imitates art and art imitates life and sometimes it’s difficult to know which we are witnessing.

All things in life aren’t black and white; there are areas of grey matter that we should consider.

Even a common object holds beauty if we choose to see it.

To be one of many isn’t necessarily the best for all; some need to be individual, to be bright and vibrant.

Living simply requires that basic needs be met.

Age and experience add character and beauty.

A good life should be in balance.

We should have respect for one another and celebrate our differences.

If we look closely, beauty can be found in everything that surrounds us.

Even those that are broken and shattered hold a beauty of their own.

Certain things in life are best repeated.

Create a haven for matters of the heart and meditate on these things daily.

It’s a wonderful life. Enjoy the journey!

Happy New Year. Thank you for your loyalty and patronage. We look forward to seeing you throughout the coming year! Open daily from 11AM to 6PM daily and we are open regular hours on New Year’s Day and New Year’s Eve! SHOP SMART. SHOP STARS.

Seasonal Contrasts

Much like the seasons change and contrast sharply one to the next, so do our homes and interiors as we shift from golden sunshine and the lengthy days of Summer to cooler temperatures mixed with rain and darkness as Fall arrives and Winter follows! Stars, Stars & Splendid, and Stars Too are filled with contrasts which draw us to certain styles and pieces.

Surface contrasts in grain, texture, hand-carvings, smooth stone, worn patinas, and shiny steels can be found in every space.

Antique and vintage mixed with contemporary blend effortlessly.

From the dining table and pantry,

to the art which hangs on the walls,

to bringing nature indoors; it’s the thrill of the hunt that never ceases.

Contrasts combine to create a statement and personal style which varies greatly from one home to the next. From cabin fever…

…to an era gone by.

No matter your style; you’ll find a wealth of unique pieces to layer, blend, and integrate cohesively. Search high and low for all your accessories and furnishings daily from 11:00-6:00 at all three stores. SHOP SMART. SHOP STARS.

Autumn Joy

As the weather changes and blustery rains and wind return, our focus shifts from outdoor gatherings to nesting indoors. Stars, Stars & Splendid, and Stars Too are filling up fast with all things wonderful for autumn. Gardens shift from shades of green to wrought iron and rusted metal decor. Fireplace screens are making their debut as cords of wood are being stacked on the porch.

Texture and color come to life in weathered doors with worn paint and knots and grain show their age and character in almost bare wood furnishings.

Details in how we decorate become very personal as we hunt and gather for unique pieces that speak to us! Turn of the century trunks from Europe have history and create a focal point in any room while they store items inside and serve as a coffee table. Place a large 3/8″ thick sheet of glass on top and place under a window for a one-of-a-kind plant table.

Tile top tables bring bold color and pattern into a small area.

Studio pottery is affordable and unique and comes in all shapes, sizes, and glazes. Display in mass numbers on an open shelf, mantel, or on top of a hutch.

A classic spindle-back bench shows fluid movement and form in fine carpentry detailing.

Victorian mantles also feature unique trims and moldings that harken back to another era, yet blend effortlessly into a more contemporary setting. Cherished family photos will look perfect displayed across these wall mounts.

Goldleaf frames are showing up as we enter Fall and will be in abundance as we near the Holidays. Frame paintings, mirrors, or leave empty and create a wall of architectural bliss by hanging multiple pieces as a statement. Look for floral designs and the much sought after piecrust corners.

Industrial, country, or an eclectic mix — whatever style you prefer, you’ll find your look at all three Stars shops.

Make it personal with your finishing touches. Hang it, frame it, and stack it. Start a collection of the ordinary and display prominently!

Mother’s Day at Stars!

The Stars family has been an extension of my life and activities with my mother, Vera, over the years. As we near Mother’s Day on Sunday May 10th, virtually every vendor at Stars, Stars & Splendid, and Stars Too has something that would bring a smile to mom’s eyes! Start your shopping early, get ideas, take notes, remember where you saw it, and if you love it, don’t hesitate for it may be gone when you return! The Stars’ stores have so many ideas and options it gets overwhelming, much like our love for moms, grandmothers and other remarkable women in our lives. Happy Mother’s Day!

Here are some things that my own mother would love — maybe yours would love them too!

Colorful additions to her collection of owls and songbirds celebrate her love of Nature.

For those moms who love working out in the garden there are a myriad of wonderful planters.

If a day at the beach is her passion, select a handmade shell box to hold treasures.

For the home, the simplicity of ivory furnishings are an easy fit for most home decor. Eastlake influences have delicate flower designs and a feminine element for mom.

A cheerful throw pillow with bold red is a constant reminder of your love; perfect for the bed or favorite chair.

Vintage glass and marble lamps with shades of deconstructed fabrics or lace will be appreciated on the side table by her favorite stack of reading materials.

Cut and pressed glass pitchers and accessories cast rainbows of light across the wall and will be lovely intermixed with existing pieces as mom entertains.

A wonderful retro mirrored vanity in a smaller scale can be placed in the bedroom. Fresh flowers will multiply with all the reflections!

Glasses double as vases for the cuttings from the flower garden each morning.

Timeless fashion includes anything turquoise!

The contrast of black and clear baubles and beads dancing around the neck is true artistry.

Animal prints run wild through the stores — a classic that defies age.

Red makes a great accent to any wardrobe — this time in a roomy leather bag with strap.

Furnishings in wood run from small compartmentalized organizers…

…to oversized cupboards with glass doors on top for display and wooden doors below for storage.

Perhaps a set of mugs that hold memories from when she was a girl will end up in her cupboard!

A well loved game for family night or a jewel-toned memory vase may be the answer.

Luggage with favorite travel destinations may take the place of the traditional box and wrapping paper with an airline ticket tucked inside!

Even a great old wavy glass jar or canister holds beauty. Fill it with sharpened pencils and have a notepad nearby for all the to-do lists.

Over the years many people in the Stars family have met my mom, Vera. For several years, she joined me at the store on weekends. She would sit near my space working word-find puzzles and sewing her yo-yos from fabric scraps that people kindly brought in for her! She has lived with my husband and I for the past eight years as we journey with her through the progression of Alzheimers. Miss Vera and I (the reality of calling her ‘mom’ slipped away three years ago) have always had a special connection. She will always be first and foremost my beloved mother, but as I became an adult and began to visit with her more, we bridged the mother-daughter relationship and became great friends. I had the incredible opportunity to know her as a woman — a midwestern farmer’s daughter, Swedish in heritage. We have gone through many highs and lows over the course of my life, but have always agreed that we love each other through thick and thin. I love you, mom! Today and always. Love, Janice

Trash to Treasure

Growing up, my grandfather had a pile of metal and tin out in a pasture just rusting away. I loved it then for all the unusual pieces and wished as a child that I could have sorted through the tall pile! What treasures could have been unearthed! Tractor seats, shovel heads and tines, old metal bedsprings, containers of all sorts and sizes were entangled with one another and sat for decades growing larger and wider each year!

From the trash can to the ice cube tray…

…from personalized military gear to the school locker…

Stars, Stars & Splendid, and Stars Too have industrial decor and furnishings in every size and patina possible!

Metal files and tool bins show up on every aisle of all three stores. Shiny, weathered, rusted and well worn; the toughest decision will be what best suits your needs.

Drawers and open displays with several compartments help the crafter, artist and tool aficionado get organized! One has to step out of the box to challenge themselves with new uses for such pieces and incorporate them into everyday living.

Even the open bin gets a new life.

In the world of linear design, a vintage shoe display and curved lines of a mold get thrown into the mix for a twist on the rigid metal basics.

A military storage locker gets cast iron legs and becomes a side table.

To think that once used for the initial purpose many just wanted to file these things away or toss them aside in a pile outside in the back pastures of a large farm. Join us at the stores to hunt and dig through bins of smaller metal pieces for collage and wall decor and find larger pieces to update a space in your home or office for a true eclectic mix.

Shopping for great gifts is easy when you join us at Stars, Stars and Splendid, and Stars Too. The difficult part is the process of narrowing down the selection and sticking to the task at hand! Open daily from 11:00-6:00pm gives ample time to browse through the many aisles and displays to find the perfect gift for friends, family, and often times, a special item for yourself!

From collectible political advertising pins from the past…

…to oversized original paintings by local artists, the selection has never been better or more diverse as our dealers fill their spaces.

Well-loved and worn dolls delight the child and the collector alike.

Nothing beats a cold winter night like a new design book filled with fresh inspiration and ideas for the home and garden.

For the gourmet cook, clever signage makes for a unique gift to hang in the kitchen or pantry!

Vintage plates, cups and saucers add new combinations for entertaining anytime of year. There is no end to the color options or patterns. You’ll be sure to find the perfect place setting for the hostess and/or host on your list.

For those in love with the grain of wood, nothing beats a series of well seasoned wooden bowls in all shapes and sizes. Use functionally or decoratively. When not in use, leave them visible atop a large cupboard stacked and nested for the texture and sculptural element.

In love with plaid? Keep those you love warm in wool shirts and jackets.

Find a great vintage thermos in a matching plaid and venture up to the mountain or over to the coast for a hot cup of cocoa and warm someone’s heart.

For those with a passion for copper; pots, pans, molds and kettles are in abundance and spilling off the shelves.

Prized porcelain basins in blue patterns and designs for the more distinguished taste!

A large selection of vintage and antique gilt frames for those who prefer gold are scattered throughout all three stores. Perfect for artwork or to hang a miniature inside a large frame. A more contemporary idea is inserting a chalkboard for daily notes and reminders!

Hang a wreath on the door as you decorate, open your door and heart to those you love, celebrate the magic of the season, and celebrate the essence and the spirit of the Holidays every day of the year!

Fall Into Place

The sun is setting earlier, there is a chill in the morning air; and yet we continue having some of the best days as summer comes to a close!

Our dealers at Stars, Stars and Splendid, and Stars Too are bringing in rich dark wood furniture in oak, fir, and mahogany.

Rubbed with color and stain, these pieces all have a history and are rich in heritage.

Butcher block tables are making their appearance again as we get prepared to cut, dice, chop, and mince the vegetables from our gardens and prepare wonderful stews and soups in oversized pots.

Coal buckets and steamer trunks make their way to the forefront for the perfect decor as we move into fall. Copper boilers are out in all three stores to hold everything from quilts to kindling.

It is a favorite time to pull out the heavier socks and textured, nubby sweaters as we clean out our closets and prepare for cooler (and shorter) days.

Nature gets brought inside as we create centerpieces in the form of vacated birds’ nests and antlers that have been found lying on the mossy floor of the woods.

We begin to move the furniture around the room for more intimate settings as the darkness creeps in. Side tables are placed next to the wingback chair for the hot cup of coffee or tea. The evenings become filled with activities that got pushed to the side during the hectic summer months.

Procrastination falls by the wayside as we begin writing the novel we always dreamed on a vintage typewriter.

Time is created for cozying up with old volumes of yearbooks and journals we have acquired.

Gathering for a tabletop game of Scrabble (no board necessary) with friends who love the art of words fills the night with laughter and learning!

Vintage treadle sewing machines come out of storage for display, and, if maintained properly give a gentle soothing tone as they are operated.

All variety of vignettes are found as you walk through the trio of stores. The best finds are found early in the season; open daily from 11am to 6pm, here is a small sampling of the transition into Fall from just a handful of our dealers.

Write up your wish list and join us at Stars, Stars and Splendid, and Stars Too as you create your own personal style for your home. You’ll be amazed at the great finds and the fun you’ll have in the process.

Up and Running

Here’s what’s new at the trio of Stars Antiques stores

All three stores are packed full! Dealers have been coming in and restocking and the selection of goods is at an all time high. Let’s take a walk through the stores and enjoy the collections of our favorite haunts. There is no end to what you will find as you browse through Stars, Stars and Splendid, and Stars Too. Remember, if you see something you love, buy it because it may not be there tomorrow.

With summer in full swing, the sidewalks are also filled with more great finds that our dealers bring in on the weekends. From bold color to white on white, from salvaged gates and bed frames to furnishings built from reclaimed materials, from vintage and collectibles to weathered and worn antiques, you are sure to find inspiration and fresh ideas as you hunt and gather.

Popular vintage patio table sets designed for the outdoors are just as suitable for the sunroom and dining area. The colorful interplay of Bauer plates and bowls just makes meals taste better especially when served al fresco.

While you’re changing out the rooms, take the iron bed outside for warm late afternoon siestas. Better yet, position it strategically in the yard or on the porch and sleep outside for the cool breezes that carry the fragrance of jasmine and honeysuckle through the evening air. Think about taking an old garden gate and hanging it on the fence for great shadow play as the sun passes through the yard. Hanging it indoors, the gate quickly becomes a wire grid clipboard of favorite photos and notes.

Pillows of burlap and bows give a quick update to any chair, sofa, or bed in neutrals at Stars.

If you want more color try out the colorful silk souvenir pillows complete with fringe at Stars Too.

Grab a book to curl up with from the sorted and categorized book cart found outside of Stars on the sidewalk every weekend.

Better still, if you feel daring, pull a few volumes from the many books artfully arranged in the cupboard at Stars Too.

If you love the notion of repurposing and buying found objects, check out the salvaged windows and architectural elements that are displayed in all the stores.

From corbels and balustrades to newell posts and cornice pieces — everything old is new again when you find a new function for it.

Salvaged and repurposed wall mounts of glass, porcelain, and brass are combined with escutcheons, cover plates, and even plumbing parts to give a one-of-a-kind look to your hall, pantry, or bath and clear up clutter at the same time.

Reclaimed Douglas fir floor joists and beams become solid, sturdy, and functional tables in all shapes and sizes. Teamed with welded, blued bases of steel the turn of the century materials merge with the current industrial craze.

Indulge yourself as you shop at Stars Antiques, Stars and Splendid, and Stars Too this summer. Brighten up your interiors by pulling out your collections and displaying them in full view for everyone to enjoy!

Garden Magic

this looks like my kind of heaven

Nothing can top an evening of dining in an Oregon garden. While this summer has not been what I could call, Summer. It is quite obvious that some Oregon gardens have been thriving with our weather this year. I have heard the moans and groans of gardeners related to their dismal vegetable gardens but the flowers out there are quite happy. Or so it would seem.

look what rain and sun can do

For one enchanted evening this summer, I was invited to the gardens and cottage of Katie and Bob to sup among the flora and fauna. There was plenty of beautiful flora and two frisky squirrels supplied both the fauna and the entertainment of the evening.

Arriving early before the other guests can spoil the magic (like eating and drinking) is a must when you want to take in the whole ambience by yourself. After a quick Hi to the host and hostess, I found is necessary to poke my nose into just about everything and every place. As you can see from the photos, the garden is lovely. The perfect setting for an outdoor party. But I wanted to see the inside of this cottage. I know perfectly well that Miss Katie has scooped up some pretty nice things at Stars before I even had a chance to eyeball them.

love this light in this room

let's just move in

Sure enough, Katie announced as I started my tour that I should be aware that this cottage was pretty much exclusively furnished from Stars. Well that was like a scent to a bloodhound. I was off.

I was right. Katie has an amazing eye. An amazing eye for just the kind of things that should be sitting in my home right now. But I shrugged off this disappointment and reveled in her home and its treasures.

I want to collect string now

who knew? I'm now in love with string

Pictures are suppose to be worth 1000 words they say. Mine just don’t do justice to Katie and Bob’s quaint cottage and gardens. Thankfully Katie must have seen my dazed look after the home tour, as she escorted me quietly and quickly to the evening cocktails. Sitting in the garden, sipping cocktails and watching the other guests arrive. I surveyed this lovely scene from my patio throne and knew I had arrived in garden heaven.

flowers from the garden

That spell was broken soon enough when the call to dinner was made. Following the other guests into the cottage or was I the leader? Hunger can play tricks on you that way. Filling my plate, I made my way to the dining table set in the garden. It is a bit hard to have a conversation when your mouth is full so I just ate. Enjoying the potato salad, fried chicken and watermelon and tomato salad, I continued to eat it all. Clean that plate just like your mother always told you. Visiting can come later.

the feasting table

It did along with enjoying a magical summer evening in a lovely garden and quaint cottage in Oregon. Thanks Katie and Bob.
