Here are some fun things we found around the shops recently:

Cabin Retreat

Grab your boots, a blanket, and a sweater — we’re taking a trip to the mountains, streams, and cabins of the Pacific Northwest where the evening temperatures drop down into the 40s! You’ll find everything for your getaway, as well as cabin decor, at Stars, Stars & Splendid, and Stars Too.

Start your journey to the mountains early in the morning and enjoy the scenery along the way. You’ll want to search for country houses with creative fences, cattle grazing alongside the two land highways, and vineyards to explore and stop in at for tastings!

Be sure to stop at a local diner for an amazing meal and fill your bellies for all the activities in the fresh air.

You’re sure to see some amazing finds for cabin decor. Search out weathered wooden farm pieces and old wagon wheels, rusted tines, and farm machinery pieces with unique architectural elements.

Unique lamp bases and shades help to make a house a home as well as becoming a focal point for a room. Nubby handwoven pillows, pieced log cabin quilts, and fabulous patterned tapestries all become personal statements! Even a painted side table takes on character with a paste paper brush stroke pattern.

Make time for a scenic horseback ride and some time relaxing by the stream or river. If you head far enough east you may run across some time worn chapels and churches that will take your breath away.

When the weekend is up, be sure to leave nature as you found it, and also leave room for fresh huckleberry pie as you are homeward bound!

Join us daily from 11AM to 6PM. Our HUGE Stars Summer Sale starts Thursday, July 14 and runs through Monday, July 18. Five days of fun shopping experiences at discounts too good to be true. Troves of treasures will be lining the sidewalks as well. SHOP SMART. SHOP STARS.

A Day at the Beach

Sunshine and record temperatures have been the norm this Spring. The soaring heat has made the rain most welcome for many of us. Stars, Stars & Splendid, and Stars Too prepare for our Annual Birthday Sale June 9-12 as well as the start of summer with great finds to take us away to the oceanside without ever leaving home!

The ocean is calling to us with the roar of the waves; beckoning us to walk barefoot in the sand.

Shells are all around us if we know where to look. Large conch shells, garlands and starfish, and even treasure boxes and decorative frames bring Nature into our homes. Blue Ball canning jars and Fiestaware in shades of teal and green compliment these treasures.

Don a wetsuit and try skim boarding or get out past the whitewater and hang ten! Hunt throughout the stores for your favorite Hawaiian shirt; several vendors are featuring them in a wide range of sizes, prints, and fabrics.

Fresh seafood doesn’t get any better than at the Oregon coast; stop in at your favorite spot or pop your head into a new location and try out the fare.

Relax and unwind, you deserve a break. The clean air and rhythmic tide are perfect for a nap on the beach.

As the day comes to a close serve up a cool refreshment in vintage glassware and team it with a platter of colorful exotic fruits. A day at the beach doesn’t get any better whether actually there or simply reminiscing! Join us for all your shopping needs daily from 11-6. We’re spilling out onto the sidewalk with additional items on the weekends. SHOP SMART. SHOP STARS.

A Passion for Textiles

The wealth of textiles available serve so many purposes in our homes and workplaces. Form and function prevail while color and texture create a feeling of contentment and well-being. Stars, Stars & Splendid, and Stars Too have a vast selection to fill your linen closet and more. Have fun intermixing patterns and textures and the result will be creating a statement that is uniquely your own.

From waking up under a treasured quilt that keeps us comfortable and snug to crocheted coverlets and chenilles. The temperatures are cooling at night and it’s time to bring out the blankets and create some visual interest and provide warmth.

Decorative doilies and tablecloths add charm to a breakfast nook in the wee morning hours or at the dining room table for cozy evening meals.

Embroidered florals are soft and delicate in color and keep lovely flowers for you inside as autumn winds blow the remaining petals off the zinnias, daisies, and dahlias outside.

Silk runners with hand-braided fringe from the Victorian era bring romance and nostalgia to a dresser top or side table in the bedroom.

A cut velvet drapery panel serves as a backdrop on a sofa piled high with embroidered peacock pillows and a handwoven wool blanket.

Heavily fringed piano stools covered in quilted silks and satin work well at the dressing table and easily double as a small table to set your reading book as you drift off to sleep in your favorite chair.

Repurposed remnants teamed with bits and pieces of trim are a simple project to make for holding favorite jewelry, lingerie, and hosiery.

Vintage floral screen dividers add privacy in close quarters and shade the afternoon sun on a warm fall day.

Hooked rugs under foot are perfect bedside when the wood and stone floors start feeling cold on the toes!

Bold and colorful tapestries, rugs, and pillows transport us to another place and allow pattern and texture to be a focal point in any room.

Whatever your style, you’re sure to find a look that expresses who you are from romantic florals to bold rich color, from classic design to a mix of diverse pieces from around the world. Create a home in which you choose to dwell! Join us daily from 11-6 and start discovering the differences that make your house a home. SHOP SMART. SHOP STARS.

Memorial Day Campout

The end of May is in sight, school is finishing up and summer is on the horizon. Memorial Day is Monday, May 25, and marks the beginning of camping at the many National Parks across the country or even in your own backyard. Stars, Stars & Splendid, and Stars Too are bringing out the gear for the perfect trip to the wooded forest!

Be prepared! The training from our youth as we earned our proudly displayed badges still reflect the common sense needed for a successful journey.

Hunting for nature’s treasures, outdoor grilling and barbecue, and singing songs in the evening are a necessity.

Setting up camp, cooking basics, and open campfires will create the comforts of “home away from home” and bring everyone together in activities.

Grab your beverage of choice and plenty of cups.

Grind up coffee and place in a colorful airtight tin for the best cup-o-joe. A handy double thermos carrier allows for fresh coffee as you drive to your destination.

Stop by a local farmer’s market on your way out of town for the best selection and pack plenty of stacking bowls for the outdoors. Fresh fruit is in abundance!

Don’t forget the picnic basket filled with snacks and lunch for the day of the hike.

A good hat with a large brim is essential for sun protection and also allows a good lakeside snooze when it looks like you’re fishing!

Pack your easy-care wardrobe in a bold patterned woven basket. Then you are ready to pack the camping gear!

Pull out the coolers, thermos, and lantern from storage. Classic vintage colors and plaid patterns never grow old to the nature lover. Built to stand up over time, many of these designs have been handed down through the generations.

Folding lawn chairs and stools are perfect for packing convenience and shed the moisture of rain and morning dew!

It’s ideal to arrive in time to set up camp during the daylight. Enjoy a day of fresh mountain air, cool streams, and hikes to wildflower fields. Kick back by a fire as dusk settles in and listen to the sounds of the wilderness. If you’re in a large group pack some games to play and the campfire songbook for reminiscing the good old days before technology advanced to iPads and smart phones.

Wake up early with the sun breaking through the trees, grab the frying pans, oil, and get ready for bacon sizzling and eggs frying on a cast iron grill. Brew up the best cup of coffee over an open flame in an old percolater!!

Remember to let the gear air out once home, pre-pack the supplies you traveled with for the remainder of camping season!

Blaze a trail to the Stars stores any day of the week for the start of your camping day collections. Happy Memorial Day Weekend everyone, let the outdoor adventures begin!

Mother’s Day at Stars!

The Stars family has been an extension of my life and activities with my mother, Vera, over the years. As we near Mother’s Day on Sunday May 10th, virtually every vendor at Stars, Stars & Splendid, and Stars Too has something that would bring a smile to mom’s eyes! Start your shopping early, get ideas, take notes, remember where you saw it, and if you love it, don’t hesitate for it may be gone when you return! The Stars’ stores have so many ideas and options it gets overwhelming, much like our love for moms, grandmothers and other remarkable women in our lives. Happy Mother’s Day!

Here are some things that my own mother would love — maybe yours would love them too!

Colorful additions to her collection of owls and songbirds celebrate her love of Nature.

For those moms who love working out in the garden there are a myriad of wonderful planters.

If a day at the beach is her passion, select a handmade shell box to hold treasures.

For the home, the simplicity of ivory furnishings are an easy fit for most home decor. Eastlake influences have delicate flower designs and a feminine element for mom.

A cheerful throw pillow with bold red is a constant reminder of your love; perfect for the bed or favorite chair.

Vintage glass and marble lamps with shades of deconstructed fabrics or lace will be appreciated on the side table by her favorite stack of reading materials.

Cut and pressed glass pitchers and accessories cast rainbows of light across the wall and will be lovely intermixed with existing pieces as mom entertains.

A wonderful retro mirrored vanity in a smaller scale can be placed in the bedroom. Fresh flowers will multiply with all the reflections!

Glasses double as vases for the cuttings from the flower garden each morning.

Timeless fashion includes anything turquoise!

The contrast of black and clear baubles and beads dancing around the neck is true artistry.

Animal prints run wild through the stores — a classic that defies age.

Red makes a great accent to any wardrobe — this time in a roomy leather bag with strap.

Furnishings in wood run from small compartmentalized organizers…

…to oversized cupboards with glass doors on top for display and wooden doors below for storage.

Perhaps a set of mugs that hold memories from when she was a girl will end up in her cupboard!

A well loved game for family night or a jewel-toned memory vase may be the answer.

Luggage with favorite travel destinations may take the place of the traditional box and wrapping paper with an airline ticket tucked inside!

Even a great old wavy glass jar or canister holds beauty. Fill it with sharpened pencils and have a notepad nearby for all the to-do lists.

Over the years many people in the Stars family have met my mom, Vera. For several years, she joined me at the store on weekends. She would sit near my space working word-find puzzles and sewing her yo-yos from fabric scraps that people kindly brought in for her! She has lived with my husband and I for the past eight years as we journey with her through the progression of Alzheimers. Miss Vera and I (the reality of calling her ‘mom’ slipped away three years ago) have always had a special connection. She will always be first and foremost my beloved mother, but as I became an adult and began to visit with her more, we bridged the mother-daughter relationship and became great friends. I had the incredible opportunity to know her as a woman — a midwestern farmer’s daughter, Swedish in heritage. We have gone through many highs and lows over the course of my life, but have always agreed that we love each other through thick and thin. I love you, mom! Today and always. Love, Janice

Resolutions and a Big Stars Vintage Sale

January has brought with it a wealth of change and opportunity. Stars, Stars and Splendid, and Stars Too vintage dealers have been busy bringing in fresh, new merchandise in preparation to purge the old at the annual STARS FAMOUS HAGGLE SALE which runs Friday, January 16 through Monday, January 19. Open daily from 11AM to 6PM! This sale is one of my favorites because I love to haggle, clear my space of older pieces, and check off one resolution — a new look for a new year!

It’s easy to sit back and contemplate change, but better to achieve it. Halfway into January 2015, we tend to lose sight of any resolutions made for the New Year. We have good intentions, but our daily life can interrupt and play havoc on any hope for true change.

Set your clock a bit earlier and you’ll be amazed at what can be achieved in a short amount of time. You may even wake up to the neighbor’s chickens’ morning banter.

Start putting more fresh fruits and vegetables out in bowls and on platters. This is not only a colorful centerpiece, but a healthy snack.

Cut back on sugar and salt in your diet!

Hide the sweets away! Temptations are easy to pass up when they are not visible.

Start a collection of vintage cookbooks from Stars and search out healthier meals and menus!

Share those meals with old friends and new by scheduling gatherings throughout the year.

Make time for fresh air and exercise. Take up a new sport or get more proficient at an old one. Shopping at any of the Stars stores burns many calories! The hunt and gather, stretching to reach something up high and squatting to check out what’s in the baskets along the floor — all great exercise.

Reach out to an acquaintance by writing a letter with a vintage typewriter. Find classic stationery and envelopes as you shop with the Stars team to personalize the look!

Tell someone you love them. Vintage Valentines are in store now.

Take time for yourself.

Take a personal holiday.

Finish unfinished projects…

… and start saving for new ones.

Get organized at home — especially the kitchen! We have metal bins and cubbies of all shapes and sizes, industrial carts and tables, and wall mounts for your coats, bags and more.

Get creative by recycling found items. Don’t have the time or patience? Find it as you shop at Stars, Stars and Splendid, and Stars Too. We have a wealth of dealers who create one-of-a-kind pieces from fabric, metal, wood, shells, and more.

Take time to curl up under a lovely quilt and read a book or plan this spring’s flower garden.

Experience art.

Remember to take time to laugh and be silly.

Get better in touch with yourself, know your body and it’s limitations. Then work to feel great at the close of each day by what you have accomplished.

Happy January, everyone. Thank you for your continued patronage to our stores! Remember to join us this Friday, January 16th as we open our doors at 11AM for the STARS FAMOUS HAGGLE SALE. All three stores are overflowing with great items for your home, office, studio and, of course, gifts for friends. The sale runs through Monday, January 19th.

Meet the Dealer: Kathleen Ernst

Today we are talking with wonderful Stars Antiques dealer #89 at Splendid, Kathleen Ernst. Kathleen has nearly 30 years experience with antiques and is well-known for the gorgeous 100 years plus old salvaged stained glass windows that she hauls to Portland from the United Kingdom. Make sure to stop by her space to find yourself some unique pieces for your nest!

Here is a fun Q&A we had with Kathleen:

How did you get into antiques?
I got into the business by accident, literally. My son had a tractor accident when he was young. I had been working in the art department at a liberal arts college at the time and resigned because the accident was so serious. God watched over my son and after a year in a wheel chair he was walking once again. I took a deep, thankful breath for my son’s recovery and fighting spirit. I naturally fell into the antique business allowing me to stay home and became an antiques dealer as antiques had always interested me. Owning my own business gave me the luxury of setting my own hours and being home for the kids when they were younger. I started traveling overseas for business once they’d grown.

My mentors were my eldest sister Linda who has been a dealer for years and my first business partner, Jonelle. Jonelle invited me on a buying trip in the mid-1990s to England as her assistant and took me under her wing to learn the business of importing. Quickly she realized I was a good buyer, committed to the business and asked me to become her business partner. We opened a 3 story shop together that lasted nearly 10 years. We’d fill 40 foot marine containers 3 to 4 times a year with older vintage and antique furniture and architectural elements. Priorities and situations have changed and I only need to maintain the one space I’ve now at Splendid.

How long have you been a dealer? Do you work alone?
Way too long, 30 + years–but that’s a good thing! With age comes experience, they say? I do work alone most the time, but am not afraid to ask for help if needed. I have one of my best friends from Richland, WA that helps me occasionally. The seasoned dealers seem to make themselves available, helping out when they “see we need help” at the antique malls–watching out for one another. I’ve been selling furniture and heavy architectural elements for a long long time with some wear and tear on the bones, but so far holding my own. I’m still loving the business and the hunt. Hard work, but very rewarding!

What would you say your specialty as a dealer is?
I L-O-V-E seeking out the antique salvaged items that a homeowner or contractor can incorporate into their homes or homes away from homes, that’ll last another 100 years. I enjoy looking for late 19th century to art deco era pieces, especially today when the older pieces are getting more difficult to come by. That pushes my buttons to become more “diligent” in my buying true antiques or older vintage elements. I love antique stained glass windows and larger transom windows–they are my speciality. I’m one of the larger retailers in the NW selling these salvaged elements of the past. England has a program to replace the 100 year old windows with new painted stain glass or plain double paned windows, so some of the frames are rotten and I either have the frames replaced overseas before shipping or I make the frames myself. I also offer a custom service of changing the size of the old windows or combining windows purchased by customers to be installed into their house with precision.

What is your dream vintage score?
I guess some of the century old pub signs that used to hang on the outside of pubs throughout England as you would see today–a huge strawberry, a huge copper ball for a lawyers office and spectacles for a eye doctor stands out. Also, wonderful old crowned chimney pots that came off cottages channeling smoke as a chimney would here in the States and iron cottage gates that customers can install in their gardens. Elements not found much nowadays. In hunting for elements of the past I love the smile it brings to our customers. If they’ve smiled and sought you out to say “thank you”, then you know you’ve done your job.

Do you collect some specific things for your own home?
My collections consist of a few pieces of French furniture and unique items that tugged at my heart which are in a few oversized, open cabinets scattered throughout my cottage. I never collect one of anything. I do confess in coveting the garden antiques though. I kept one 19th century crown chimney pot, a few finials and roofing elements for my garden and a hand-carved early 19th century stone corbel off a building near Bath that was salvaged by a company that supports SALVO. This is a organization that makes certain that elements are legally salvaged and I like buying from dealers who belong to this group.

Any vintage shopping tips?
Shop and sell frugally. If you’re in the business, you’ll stay in business for a long time buying frugally. There is a time and place to haggle over the price. Don’t panic buy, but don’t pause too long or the item may very well go home with someone else. If you’re a customer, buy what tugs at your heart and what will fit in your home.

How do you like to unwind?
With close friends and family who seem to make certain I stay out of trouble by going on hikes, renting beach houses, camping and sleepovers. I love to work on my historic house and in the garden. I love traveling! I have been blessed with the opportunity to travel and I love to share the travel fun with family and friends. Life is short–I’ve always jumped at opportunities that incorporate traveling if possible.

What are some of your favorites place to eat, visit or shop in Portland?
I believe its called Ruth’s Chris–it’s a steak house that my son and daughter-in-law took me to recently. Yum! My pocket book takes me to places like Pot Stickers or I love McMennamin’s.

A Splendid Halloween

Here are some photos of our fun Halloween display at Splendid. We love decorating these ghoulish scenes for you at Stars Antiques! Come down for some inspiration and spooky things to decorate your home. AND don’t forget to eat some candy corn from our candy machine!
